A Gardener's OTHER Hobbies? YES! A Few || Black Gumbo

@WILLITGROW
John at the YouTube channel WILL IT GROW?, tagged me in a recent video. He wanted to know from fellow gardeners what other hobbies they have. I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to share with you some of the other things that I do. I’ll show you in this video. I invite my fellow YouTube gardeners to share their Hobbies as well, for many of us don’t have the opportunity to practice gardening during the winter months. John thought this would be a great way to keep some content fresh. I’ll be planting some winter starts in a raised bed as I talk about my other hobbies and show you some examples of the work I do.

Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!

  1. Those paintings! Beautiful. And the photography! Amazing. Your an artist. Loved this video. It was fun to see your many talents. Thank you for sharing this with us.

  2. Yes, I remember the student publications (different school)! I loved the old Mamiya C330s but don’t miss the darkroom a bit.

You nurtured so many of your diverse talents, you are a role model for the rest of us!

  3. Should we call you Scott "Ross" now 😉. I use to build models. Those cheap balsa airplanes were fun to. Especially the rubber band kind. My friend had a F4 Phantom that I decided to make a rocket motor fit in for some curious fun. When launched it flew in several huge vertical circles perpendicular to me before hitting the ground. The motor was mounted with an angle slightly to one side. Aside from that I repair a variety of things. In my thinking anything can be a hobby that gives meaning. That includes Halloween decorating that always amazes people of all ages with appreciation and anticipation for the next year. In the end I am a jack of many things, and master of whatever I have to be at the time.

  4. Scott — Your next venture. Gardens in a bottle (not terrarium).but a detailed dry garden setting. Maybe with a painter sitting at his canvas in the garden painting a favorite plant.. — "Ships in a bottle" has nothing on you. Ray Delbury Sussex County NJ USA

  5. Your paintings are wonderful! Photography, too.

Besides dabbling in gardening, I embroider and have a few small collections. I especially like old flower pots. They are great for my many succulents & begonias. My main collection! And my hubs & I transport rescue dogs! Very rewarding.

I very much enjoy your channel, thank you.

  6. Yep! Loved this video. You are very talented. I love your paintings especially but seeing your models and photos was really awesome too. I have never developed a love or knack for watercolor medium and stick pretty much to oils. I did an oil painting over acrylic background this past year that was fun. Lately though, I’ve really fallen for graphite pencil and polychromos colored pencils. Thanks for letting us get to know you more. I bet there’s a whole lot of talent in those who watch this channel…the things we could learn and the stories we could tell! ❤

  7. I am in CT 6B near @YANKEESISTA. I am Starting a small indoor Garden this winter. 💜💜💜 Hobbies are my Hobby too. I am a Máster Quilter among other things. 🌹🌹🌹AuntieEllen

  8. Wow! Those paintings are awesome! I wish I had that gift, but I don't. Love photography. My husband used to develop black and white in our bathroom when we lived in Germany. Now all we do is digital. My hobby is sewing and quilting. And coming up with projects for my husband! Thanks again for sharing!

  9. Wow love that Art drawing .painting and photography is back in with Classic. My son is 25 and he’s gotten into that…, he’s even gotten a few jobs from a wedding using all older cameras

  10. This was a very interesting video! Your watercolors are breathtaking! I think it takes alot of creativity & patience to plan and grow a garden. The artistic process is much the same… you begin with a vision… and it is accomplished in faith. Thanks for sharing!

  11. Scott, this video brought me so much joy. I'm up in 6a with a frozen garden, working on a rag rug project while I watch gardening videos. I love getting a window into the sort of retirement I might want for myself someday.

  12. Lovely, Scott! You certainly weren't standing behind the door when God gave out the talents. But I know what patience and dedication it takes to develop those talents. ❤️

  13. Love your paintings, cameras and scale models. You and I have the same hobbies my friend. I am also in Texas, north Central.

  14. set up a link and sell the original paintings from it- or you could copy the paintings and only make so many copies each so everyone can have more than one choice

  15. Wow. Amazing art my friend. I agree that for those of us living in "White Winter Country" a hobby, or hobbies, is a great idea. I spend a lot of time cooking and doing some DIY stuff around the house. Plus I also love photography (old school too) and art (I've painted many D&D miniatures, because I'm a nerd 😁).
Until mid winter – when its time to start planting some seeds again 😁
    Because GARDENING eh?
Yes, I'm in Canada. Montreal, Quebec actually, and it gets a little cold 🥶 until about March/April.

  16. Cool models!! There's a YT channel I'm sure you are aware called scale-a-ton where he does some amazing detailed models. Cheers, Scott!

  17. Awesome photos and artwork as well. I'd love to see your "pew pew" collection but we don't want you banned from YouTube!

  18. I still have my Canon AE1 too! Works great. Also have my Dad’s Minolta. Your pictures are great and paintings amazing. I used to oil paint but water color is beyond my abilities.

Now I crochet and have joined a group that makes hats for cancer patients. Being a recent breast cancer survivor, it’s nice to combine this hobby and give back.

When I was getting chemo, I used to bring plant starts to the nurses. They all had my tomatoes summer 2021!

  19. The right Chemistry teacher can be very expansive for a naturalist but not necessary to be a naturalist. Nonetheless interesting.
I have sensory issues and something going on with the way my brain works with my eyes (maybe Irlens Syndrome), but have been wanting to explore photography. I get discouraged because I often pick the less desirable example of good photography in the textbook examples.
I'd describe my former Chemistry teacher as an adult who is still curious. He was interested in teaching a class that was adapted to the interests of his students, so he explained things like how ozone is created in the atmosphere. He was able to provide me with self teaching materials that I could work on over the summer.
Your photographs and paintings look like you photograph and paint what you love.
