Attention farmers and gardeners: Food shortages and Planting an extra row

Attention farmers, producers and home gardeners! As we set in motion our spring planting, we call on you to do your part to grow West Virginia’s food resiliency by planting extra rows this year. Supply chain issues, inflation, the pandemic and the War in Ukraine have shown us the importance of creating an independent U.S. within the world market. History tells us that famine typically follows a pandemic and I fear, just like our energy sector, continued reliance on foreign nations for food will have dire consequences. We already have experienced what this could look like when prices and food scarcity skyrocketed during the beginning of the pandemic. We survived by shifting our focus towards local agriculture which led to all-time records for local food sales and meat processing. As we look for ways to foster growth through local agriculture, I am asking all producers to consider planting an extra row of something, anything commonly consumed in West Virginia.
As we saw production shift due to the pandemic, it became vital we not only support local producers but encourage average citizens to grow their own food. The strains on the food system we experienced in the early part of the pandemic were due to the closure of restaurants. Without these businesses, 30% of food we consumed in the United States was taken out of the marketplace. As restaurants closed their doors, processing facilities had to focus on direct consumer production, increasing more strain on our grocers. These types of shifts do not occur overnight which caused a lag behind the increased grocery shopping. We are seeing the trend reverse as we shift back to our pre-pandemic lifestyles.

  1. Thank you Chris! We are in WV. Some of my family and friends think I'm full of bull feathers and still don't believe me when I tell them about the shortages coming down the line. Shared your video and the commissioner's full letter straight from the website. Hopefully this will jolt them awake.

  2. Tonight a local Walmart was down to maybe 5-10% of cheese and lunchmeat in stock. Not sure if it was staffing or supply, but a scary sight after all this talk on coming food shortages.

  3. Morning Chris! Just 2 days ago a farm about 25 minutes from us just lost all their chickens to the flu. That hits a little close to home.☺️ as you know we are in upstate NY. Your almost at 10k subscribers cant wait to see you hit that! Go man go!☺️

  4. It feels like everything is going down sooner (like now) than expected.

Sorry I've been out. I had a metal scooter fall on my head. I've had a bad concussion since last Tuesday. Dizzy and headaches, can't drive. Sure didn't need it.

  5. Nobody has a garden around here anymore. Even out rural areas have nothing but grass and maybe a fruit tree or two. Potatoes don't grow well here but plantains do. Pineapples, tomatoes, sweet potatoes. I hit the dumpster at Aldi and Presidente and use old produce for duck food and compost. Banana buds can be turned into sauerkraut.

  6. Silver is a good investment but you can’t eat silver. When in a food shortage, Food is better than gold.

  7. "Do your part"…? As if planting an extra row of anything is for anybody but my own family? I will trade with folks, when it comes to that, but I'm putting a lot of effort into not becoming somebody's charity case, and I'm gonna make damn sure I don't take any, either.

  8. Just bought 8 cases of canned chicken and 12 cases canned veggies.

Bought fertilizer last fall before price went up.

  9. I going to grow some more stuff My kids won't listen so I gonna have to look after them They all are doing good but they don't believe things are going to change WHAT'S A DAD TO DO !!

  10. In 2020 during lockdowns etc. a local church began a garden . An unsed portion of a farm was donated to the cause . the locals volunteered( under the direction of a farmer ) to do the garden work and all food is donated to a local food bank. they gave 1000s of pounds of veggies each year.
Schools, churches, etc could all begin gardens where possible to help feed their families, community etc. Good idea West VA.

  11. Chris do you got an email. I want to send you and ninja something. It's important and related to everything you guys are saying.

  12. Chris you've been so on the money with the Bird Flu story! I remember you talking about that when it was still just an obscure story out of Israel and here we are with 20million+ birds being culled in the US. Glad I've been following you! My birds are in the brooder gettin big and strong and I'm building my chicken run this weekend. You're on point brother, keep puttin the work in!

  13. Awesome Video again Chris keep it up.

I am all for helping others but as the protector of the flock, my family will come first. So while planning ahead I have now begun to stock up on "gift food" for the friend or neighbor in need. Food that will keep someone from going hungry and is easy to store for long term. If you have a garden, fresh veggies and a can of tuna goes great with mac and cheese, rice or even ramen. Going to start collecting seeds from the garden this year to dry and give with the food. A teach them how to fish instead of keep giving them the fish thought process. Stay safe everyone.

  14. IN Canada, the Federal government just added 25% increase on the cardon tax on fuels. You should just look after your family. Do not take any produce to cities and towns. They are the ones who voted in the Liberal/NDP coalition.

  15. They use the pcr test for bird flu. That test was never meant to be diagnosing. Are these farmer’s chickens dying because of the flu or are they “found” positive then they all have to be euthanized?

  16. Northern Indiana chickens are experiencing what is called Egg Drop Syndrome. This is when chickens produce soft shelled eggs or eggs without shells. Good news is it doesn’t harm the chicken and will pass, but may impact egg production in this region.

  17. From Canada.. I just watched a documentary on how our farmers are to dump extra food like potatoes', beets and other crop products. To keep fair trade practices'. While I watch this I'm thinking of all the homeless people that would like this extra food OR we won't have food shortages. This world is Nuts.

  18. I think this pandemic has taught people the importance of multiple streams of income, unfortunately having a job doesn't mean security rather having different investments is the real deal…..

  19. Hey Chris, my brother in law introduced me to your channel. Thanks so much for talking the truth so spot on!!!
We can sense and resonate back home in RSA very well with you are experiencing in the US right now.

I must say being a fulltime knife craftsman for more than 15 years now I can tell you’ve got most probably the most steady 🎙 stand in the world!!🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵😜😜

  20. THEY are using the same defective prc test on chickens that THEY used for c19. It isn't reliable. My wife will defend her chickens lives.

  21. This is so important Chris. I only have pots to grow things. I’m going to try to grow sweet potatoes and possibly some other things. How do you keep animals from digging them out? Are there any plants you can plant with them to keep them away? Sorry for all the questions. I know you’re so busy. Thanks for this video. It’s helpful to know these things.

  22. Funny, I actually read about this very thing in agenda 21 ! Don’t believe me, go read it yourself ! It’s in the about doing for the bigger good !
