Filling a new raised garden bed

Filling a new raised garden bed

I made this bed to be my new garlic bed. Once the bed was in place I started by filling the bed with wood chips. Then I added straw on top of the wood chips. After that I put four wheel barrow full of compost into the bed and watered it in with rain water stored in my barrel. Finally I added 8 bags of vegetable garden soil from Lowes on top of the compost and raked everything smooth. Once I plant the garlic I will cover them with a mulch to help insulate the soil and keep the soil moist.

  1. The straw should soak up the water and act as a water reservoir during the growing season. If you're not going to top the bed off with mulch after you plant, it would be good to totally top off the bed 1st. The bottom materials will break down pretty quick along with natural settling, dropping the soil level down.

  2. I get a lot of valuable information about gardening from your videos. Thanks a lot for sharing. Notification will come again. Come to my family when you have time.

  3. Good plan Rick !! Material looks good and you can't beat 33c a bag !!
One thing Colleen noticed, when you build you next beds, maybe consider making the path big enough for a wheelbarrow to fit down. She's wicked smart :))))
Looking good brother!! Bokashi will go great in there as well 😉
    Cheers Rick

  4. Really nice demonstration of the layering that goes into a new bed. This project has been so quick to get into production already (at least for us watching just the videos – I’m sure it’s been a lot of work for you!). We had a lot of settling in the first two years after putting in our raised beds, using a similar hugelkultur method. Good thing you have more compost on the way so you can top dress this bed when needed, Rick!
