The Maharaja's German Gardener | G. H. Krumbiegel | Documentary

A story worth telling of an environmentalist, years ahead of his time. Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel, a German botanist, who was born in Dresden, Germany, crossed the channel to work at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, England. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the ruler of Baroda, persuaded him to leave England for a journey of a lifetime. He had designed and landscaped many gardens across India. The story takes the audience to the gardens of Baroda in Gujarat, Government Botanical Gardens in Ooty, Tamil Nadu, Lalbagh in Bengaluru, Brindavan Gardens in Mysuru, Jubilee Park in Jamshedpur, Kew Gardens in London, and Pillnitz in Germany. After Mahatma Gandhi’s death, Krumbiegel, 90 years old at that time was invited by the Indian Government to landscape his memorial garden in New Delhi.

This film traces the legacy of this great German, Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel, which remains largely unknown.

  1. Absolutely wonderful film! So great to know about the person responsible for so many iconic settings across India. Kudos to the entire Mindia team .

  2. An incredible narrative. I often bicycled on Krumbiegel road in Bangalore in the 1960s and wondered about the name. This documentary tells the whole story, Much of the gardening heritage of Bangalore and Mysore and even other parts of India are due to him.

  3. A very good documentary. Feels good to see that we've acknowledged the immense contribution made by Mr Krumbiegel to the town planning and horticulture of Bangalore and other parts of India. Thank you for this informative and well compiled film.

  4. Being a Bengaluriyan and stayed (1960-1964) quite near to Lalbaugh gardens, (My sister's house) I happen to see a name board of Road called Kruibiegel road, leading to the Makri circle. I wanted to know who is this Krumbiegel ? I became a Wikipedia editor (Kn) later in 2005. Collected lots of data, here and there with out much satisfaction. Today, after watching this amazing Youtube, my ambition is fulfilled. Thanks to the beautiful production by the team of Krumbiegel fans, and his great great grand daughter, Ms.Alyia !

  5. I just watched the documentary. It was mesmerising, beautifully developed and the story was told with beautiful videography. Its amazing how the Germans did not know how great a child they created. My heart felt sore with that ending. It left one to ask why was his family and himself not taken care of in their old age. I wonder if it was the final influence of the British entities to punish Krumbiegel for creating gardens to compete with the best in England. How can he die so poor. At 90 years old for his wife to travel back to England when India was where her heart was and should have died there.

  6. Awesome how much a person could contribute in his life time. Vasudevakudumbakkam. We need to understand his involvement in a positive way wherever he went. Amazing and unbelievable thank u very much for this documentary

  7. Such an informative documentary. I come from Jamshedpur where we have 'Jubilee Park' which too is designed by Krumbiegel. I got to know about him in Suresh Jayaram's book 'Bangalore's Lalbagh'. 🙏

  8. I had visited almost all gardens designed by Krumbeigel, exceptions are Coochbehar and Alwar. Little did I know that GH Krumbeigel designed these. Sad that he was interned by the Brits during WW, and his British widow left homeless in Bangalore, after his death.

  9. The narrator have to practice a bit before rendering such historical documentary as it reaches audience world wide. You cannot say Nineteen 'O' ten in a world premier! 32:23

  10. It is certainly remarkable that the Gaikwad of Baroda allowed or lent someone in his employ, to work with other states, presumably for the greater common good!

  11. Many congratulations to MINDIA , the team and all the participants who got this film to production it has taken 5 years and at the final hurdle we had to contend with the terrible world wide Covid pandemic
I’m so glad that Great Grandfathers story has been finally told
    Warmest wishes Alyia Krumbiegel

  13. Beautifully made documentary film, lot of information about Krumbigal which we did not know. Thanks to Mindia team, nice work 🙂

  14. Wonderful to see that his contributions are being acknowledged and recognized. His personal life is quintessential karma yoga journey. Glad to know this piece of history as I am of Mysore origin.

  15. If only the Lal Bagh flower shows were more beautiful, focussed on aesthetics, planned and designed by horticulturists, rather than municipal representatives

  16. A good documentary. Well narrated . His work & contributions will remain evergreen in the hearts of every Bangolerian . His roots are deep down in the every plant of all the gardens he has created for us . Appreciate his dedicated services . 🙏. We Bangolerian s will definitely carry his work forward for a green city .

  17. The Maharaja is also known to have shaken hands with and been a personal friend of his Chief Conservator of forest Govinda Rao with whom he used to go on shikhar and his controller of the Treasury Kuppuswamy Iyer. Today private citizens of India are too impoverished to have personal gardens that I remember from my childhood (1960s). The Government Parks too have been divested of lawns and flowering plants which have been replaced with easily maintained foliage and trees and imprisoned behind fences and gates Aesthetics, as a symbol of royalty and gracious living was abolished in 1949 together with integrity and competence with the assumption of paramountcy by the successors to the British, the Colonial-Communist-Fascist regime known as the Indian Republic.

  18. Such a beautiful tribute to G H Krumbiegel, who made Bangalore into the beautiful garden City we know today! So honoured and proud to be friends with his great grand daughter, Alyia Krumbiegel. ❤️

  19. This was part of the in-flight film catalog of Lufthansa (of course). I'm happy to see that it's publicly available!
