How to protect Musa basjoo #bananaplants in winter. Banana plants growing in UK #tropicalgarden

Sometimes called banana trees, these Musa basjoo plants are actually just giant herbs made up of lots of soft herbaceous material. Although the roots are much hardier than the rest of the plant, we want to protect that soft herbaceous material to maintain height year on year.

How you protect your banana plants depends on the clinate where you are growing them. If your garden drops below freezing for long periods of time it is best to protect the stem with horticultural fleece or straw.

If like me you are growing somewhere close to zone nine, you can usually get away with not protecting the banana and you will only lose the very tip of the plant.

All you can do is your best when it comes to overwintering plants, but the weather is not always predictable. My best tip would be to just enjoy the process, if you succeed then you will have fantastic plants for next year, if you don’t succeed then you can look forward to more plant shopping next spring! It’s a win-win situation.
