How to Insulate a Shipping Container Home

Insulating a Shipping Container Home is a MAJOR priority for us as we prepare for winter…time to get working! Click here: https://www.ritual.com/TYLERTODD20 to get 20% off your first month with Ritual. Thanks Ritual for partnering on this video

The idea to build a house out of shipping containers was definitely one of the wildest ones we’ve had and if you’ve been joining our weekly videos for any amount of time you know that’s saying something, we’re confident it will work out in the long run but it’s a big setback.

Join us every Sunday as we continue to create off the grid homestead vlogs, sharing our adventures as we build our own alternative lifestyle, living simply in the wild wonderful off grid forest!

How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We’ve spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we’ll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome’s and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.

  1. Given how little insulation we did on the interior, we really weren’t sure what to expect for retaining heat but after just a few hours with the fire lit it felt like we were sitting on a beach in the Caribbean. Not only does that mean the fires we’re making can be much smaller, saving us time and money but it also means that no matter what we’ll be comfortable building the container home this winter. Sure, we’ll have to tend to the fire every few hours to keep it warm but if you know us…we’ve got a plan up our sleeves to help with that too. Also, do us a big favour and double check if you’re still subscribed. A bunch of you were commenting in last week’s video that for some reason you were unsubscribed. See you Sunday xoxo

  2. Before retiring, I worked for a propane company. Let me say that those guys who deliver the propane have to be so very careful on some roads because that propane can shift easily in those tankers if they are not on flat surfaces. In my 13yrs there, we had several accidents with our tankers. One got on soft dirt and rolled on its side. It looked like every fire company in the area was called in. Ours were mostly smaller tankers because we had a lot of people who have gas fireplaces and we only had one man who drove the big long one. You are so smart going that direction. Sort of interesting working there.

  3. i really love your show, im an office manager at a company in mission BC that makes container houses and storage units, and no one ever has time to teach me about this stuff. so i can learn from you guys.

  4. I’m so happy for you and your continued progress. Say happy and healthy. Sending you good luck and good vibes from my part of the world. ❤

  5. Stumbling upon your channel 2 weeks ago has been my guilty pleasure. I have binge watched you until 1am like my favorite Netflix series. I have laughed out loud with you and cried silent tears with you. You two and your furry friends have so much to be proud about! I can not wait to now watch these shipping containers come life and following along the rest of your journey.

  6. Love the progression, you guys are so inspiring to others! Todd luckily you are slim crawling under your home….claustrophobic! 😵‍💫 Driveway looking great, laziness isn’t in your vocabulary! 💙💙🎄🎉🎅🎅🇦🇺🍻

  7. After ALL that Purple insulation indoors… Prince (Purple Rain) would have been at home 🙂

  8. I’ve been following you guys since the beginning when my friend Chris M told me about you two. She happens to know you and she was right about how amazing you both are! All of your trials and tribulations are a true testament of the strength of your relationship. I am amazed by your attitude and conviction to this project. We can all see that it would be too much for some people to pursue this dream… but you can and are doing it. Just know that you have a whole community pulling for you and your dream property. I say you should be on television for the whole world to see!

  9. They're working so hard. It will be worth it when they get cosy during those cold mornings while some are heading to work in the rain .😇

  10. @Tyler and Todd

Since you are vegan: On meat substitutes and iron:

Recent research by the swedish university Chalmers and the university of Aarhus in Denmark has shown that vegomeat products, meat substitutes, while containing much iron, also contain high levels of phytate. The phytate stops the body from assimilating the iron. The vegomeat processing methods can increase the levels of phytate in the food, which worsens the situation. This means that you can suffer from a lack of iron while still have a lot of iron in your food.

So, should we do anything about it, while waiting for the situation to improve?
    I suggest two things.
1 – If you worry about your iron levels, test your blood levels once every six months (that should be enough), and see if you need to change something about your food intake.
2 – You could check the contents statement on the package of your chosen meat substitute. There are some types of contents which contain less phytates than others.
3 – It will probably take some time before you can read "this product guaranteed to contain enough of absorbable iron", and trust it.
4 – This information is interesting also because, very generally speaking, this type of functionality has been widely known for a very long time. Take the hobby of tropical fish. When the industry realised that plants need fertilizing to grow well, mainly iron but also other stuff, they quickly found out that the iron combined with other substances in the water, and the plants couldn't absorb it. No sales of iron fertilisers… It took some time for them to take care of that problem.
    cheers!/CS

  11. One project develops into MANY projects. Exciting to see the progress and interesting to watch this new path go in. The energy level of YOU TWO is amazing!! Youth on your side🤩

  12. M happy that everything is coming together ❤️ I would love a house made out containers, specially the way both of you are building yours . It's not even finish and I just love it , just how both of you are doing the perfect design

  13. After watching the two of you build your dream. I noticed that neither of you wear a back brace. You really should think about wearing one. Keep up the great work. The two of you are so amazing and so sweet. Be safe. can't wait to see what comes next!

  14. Wow I ran across a company that made a custom finishing insulation that was amazing and cost effective I wish I could remember who they were and their system also dealt with condensation issues had a really nice way to do wiring as well, got to say you guys are always taking the hard way but you still are doing a really great job so Id hate to be the big spoiler of "oh I couldve done that🙄" Yeah I almost went that direction but fell in love with domes.

  15. I swear you guys are the only thing that gets me through the week. You represent our community with dignity and class. I have so much respect for your ethics. I thoroughly believe you two should have your own Sitcom. And this year all I want for Christmas is a full hour show. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

  16. Have you had any issues with thermal transmission through the outside floor areas? I've had a few conditions where the moisture forms on the metal inside walls by the base of the containers.

  17. Bloody hell 3 years since you started it only seems like last year I began following you 2 , it’s been a joy and I look forward to Sunday evenings when I catch up on your weeks shenanigans happy Christmas 🎅 boys x
