11:56 June! Our yard currently!

We’re gradually making progress! Most of the spots we’ve been planting were previously under concrete (either the previous house’s foundation or their old driveway) so the dirt was all super compacted. Digging it up and improving the soil was probably the most time consuming aspect of this. In retrospect, maybe we should’ve tried to find some machinery we could rent, lol.

We’ve been kind of winging it with the design and will change things around a bit as we move on, but things are gradually coming together. Our next step will be to add a walkway, but now that we’ve reached the humid part of Japanese summer we might have to wait until fall for the heavy work. Plenty of weeding to do in the meantime, lol.

Our yard after 6 months of work! Well, let's be honest, 6 months of Jun doing most of the work. We've been kind of winging it with the layout but it's starting to come together. Next plan is to adjust the shape of the flower beds a bit and then put in (probably a brick) walkway in between them. The vegetable garden we're planning to put behind the BBQ pit (which I'd also like to remake a bit, maybe with like a brick wall so we can use the half-burned pointy stick wood as benches). But that might have to wait until fall. We've finally entered rainy season and it's also starting to get humid, so we're going to switch a bit more to work inside the house for now!

  2. Rachel and Jun, Love your videos! Especially because of the cats. I'm confused though. I watched the August 6th (I think) video about the house you bought. Is this a second house?

  3. I have never seen a tree planted with the burlap and rope still wrapped around the root ball. Is that the method used in Japan? Does that keep the tree smaller?

  4. i love how wholesome u react when u see the little lizards and gently covering them back up. im like i would react compeletly the same way. they are toooo cuuutteee

  5. I like that you care about the little lizards. I like lizards and frogs. We have some cute ones here in South East North Carolina where I live. Hydrangeas are a popular plant here.

  6. I love how you showed a mixture of how you replanted yourself, got help from friends, and had a crane involved. Redesigning my garden has been so intimidating. Y’all have given me the courage to design a native garden. I really want to pull out the invasive things and create a tiny wildlife sanctuary in my yard since everything is so “cookie cutter” in my neighborhood.

  7. Thank you for sharing this 🙂 I love how Rachel and Jun are particularly gentle with the animals and plants around them. The video is soothing and also very inspirational! 😊🌳🦎🐱🧡

  8. Great work on the garden and deck. It was all close ups. I wish I could have seen the garden from a little farther away to get the overall impression

  9. I really hope to see masks dissapear soon. I have never worn one and I hope to never wear one. I feel so sad when people wear them all day or for no reason. Corona has always been around and we should not let fear alter our behavior. Also, Hong Kong was uprising when covid #event201 happened. So we know this is about control. Love y'all! God bless!

  10. JUN, YOU DID WORK VERY HARD I KNOW BECAUSE I'VE DONE THAT KIND OF WORK! MY WHOLE LIFE I'VE DONE THAT KIND OF WORK GOOD FOR YOU AND I'M PROUD OF YOU!! HEAVEN WAS BORN IN THE GARDEN…. AND THOSE THINGS THAT YOU THINK ARE WEEDS ARE NOT WEEDS. THOSE NATIVE GRASSES OR WHATEVER THAT IS TAKING OVER YOUR BARE SPACES YOU SHOULD PROBABLY LET THEM DO THAT. THE POLLINATORS WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT
