How to Plan a Dahlia Cut Flower Garden ๐Ÿ’ Tips for mapping your dahlia tuber or cut flower farm

Do you want to learn how to plan a dahlia cut flower garden? In this video, I go beyond the basics of how to grow dahlias and share how I layout the map for my small dahlia tuber farm. This will help you plan if you are expanding your dahlia collection, starting a cut flower garden, or even starting small scale flower farm (and growing dahlias for cut flowers or tubers). I also made a dahlia map spreadsheet template, which you can download, here! https://www.gardensbyevelyn.com/dahlia-garden-map-spreadsheet/

My name is Eve Hanlin and Iโ€™m a dahlia farmer from the PNW, USA. I have learned a lot through trial and error over years of growing dahlias, and am excited to be sharing growing tips with you, to hopefully save you some of that same โ€œtrial and error.โ€ I create videos to help beginner flower farmers and dahlia enthusiasts grow more blooms and tubers.

  1. You are the one and only! Just for sharing this kind of information! Hope your dahlia selling was stunning this year!!!

  2. Really interesting video Eve. You must be the most eloquent dahlia grower on YouTube! When I make my own dahlia growing videos I only say one sentence per clip, any more than that and Iโ€™m bound to mess it up by saying something silly! Geoff

  3. Thank you for this video! It is so smart and practical. You don't even have to have a dahlia farm or grow a lot of them to need some kind of planning. I am just a gardener who put in a whole bunch of dahlias (~30 tubers) last year in the garden without a lot of planning. Tags get lost or damaged, and trust me, you may think you know where you plant everything, but you'll forget. Unfortunately, I've lost track of at least half of my dahlias. I'll have to "relabel" them when the flowers come out. I can't wait to put my dahlias in the ground this year–with more planning, of course. Thank you again for your videos!

Have you had an experience with gophers or ground dwelling critters? I must have lost 1/3 of my tubers to them last year.

  4. I am so thrilled to find this video. I received dahlias from you just a few weeks ago and potted them up in zone 5a. They already have beautiful sprouts. But like I am sure lots of people do I have ordered so so so many dahlias. This video is very helpful.

  5. Thanks so much for your generous spirit and sharing tips and ideas that you have learned over the past years as a dahlia farmer. I am relatively new to dahlias- 2 years in pots and now planning my 2nd season in the ground. I've kept notes and ideas in a journal-nothing quite so extensive as your spread sheet though. Might be a great idea going forward.Have overwintered about 30 varieties and awaiting many more of course. Thanks again – looking forward to implementing some of your tips for 2022.

  6. Great video, chock full of tips! I have a similar spreadsheet for my dahlias, but I didn't think to include the counts of them and be able to easily tally up the rows! I haven't yet planned the order of where my dahlias will go, but I'll take into account your thoughts and suggestions!

  7. I started growing dahlia's last year and have watched dozens of videos on how to grow them. This 20 minutes video is the absolute best I've seen. So many useful and practical ideas. I'm just getting ready to plant this year's crop. The information you provided will be invaluable. Subscribed.

  8. Just watched all your videos. This is my first year growing dahlias and your videos have great explanations and clear shots! I hope to see more, like a dahlia tour of your garden later this season maybe?

Also I have a question, Iโ€™m growing in hawaii and my lowest winter temps this year was maybe 70 deg F. Iโ€™m planning on digging up my tubers later because I have rainy winters. But how will I know when to dig up my tubers if there is no frost?

  9. I live in Alberta, Canada in zone 2-3. I grew my first dinner plate dahlia's this year and was pleasantly surprised with the blooms. I recently pulled them out of the garden. Some of the root systems were huge. My question is should I be dividing them after the first year or should I be waiting for a couple more years. I also sliced through some of the tubers damaging them. I assume I should be removing the damaged ones before I store them. Looking forward to your reply

  10. You were talking about rotational cover crops to enhance the soil. You may want to look into buck wheat. We use it on our hayland as a rotational crop and it works really well.

  11. This is such great information. I'm definitely signing up for your email info and spreadsheet sample!!! Thank you so much. ๐Ÿ’“

  12. Apropos pests – what do you do about earwigs? They were especially fierce among a few of my dahlias and in the Chinese cabbage this year.

  13. I've been watching your landscape design videos for over a year, and never realised you are a Dahlia farmer!! I clearly have more video bingeing to do ๐Ÿ™‚
