B- he doesn’t have enough experience at safety to just be able to switch positions in a day and due to it being so late in the offseason he’s not gonna have nearly as much time to adjust. Plus we have Maddox who is a top 15 slot corner much rather tried to pursue bates harder he’s more of a true safety. It’s still a great pickup for absolute pocket change but I do understand howies thinking a top tier player at a position of need came available and he pulled the trigger without really thinking about how he’d fit into the scheme
Tbh Idk how well well do he’s a nickel not a safety he’s only played 80 snaps at safety in the nfl in 4 years that’s not enough experience to just suddenly switch. And before people say it’s basically the same position you couldn’t be anymore wrong. Nickel corners are predominantly used to cover players coming out of the slot. In the slot you tend to run more side to side routes like drags or slants or quick outs all of these require a nickel back to have good side to side horizontal movement. Compared to a safety who’s job it usually is to keep the top on the defense. That required a lot of back peddling and vertical movement. It seems subtle but when you play 90 percent of your snaps moving one way then all of a sudden have to change the way you move its definitely not a good look after years of moving a different way And fo make it even worse he only has 2 weeks to get used to the change. Definitely don’t expect him to play very well in the first few weeks of the season.
