TRADITIONAL JAPANESE HOUSE TOUR – This is the Old Aoki Residence



The Old Aoki Shusuke residence.

Born in 1803 Shusuke Aoki was known for being the physician to the 13th Lord Of Hagi Takachika Mouri.

Learned in both traditional herbal medicine and western medicine, via the Dutch trade, his early knowledge and work on inculcation enabled him to treat smallpox successfully. The Lord so impressed by Shusuke bestowed on him the rank of samurai.

Following Shusuke’s death (61), his younger brother Kenzo inherited his title and land. Kenzo died at the age of 52, not before adopting a son from a talented family of Doctors and named him Shuzo.

Shuzo also became a talented doctor and had the opportunity to study in Germany. It was there that he met the daughter of a German aristocrat named Elizabeth. Failing to have his marriage recognized by the Tokugawa shogunate, Shuzo decided to spend the rest of his life in Germany.
