How to Create a Winter AquaPot & Put the Garden to Bed for Winter | Gardening with Creekside

I am spending a few hours in the nursery’s entrance gardens and putting them to bed for the winter and creating a winter AquaPot with materials gathered from our property. It sure does feel great to tidy up this space and make it more welcoming for our Christmas guests.

  1. Don't be afraid of the leaves, Jenny! 🙂 Jim Putnam says it's ok to leave the leaves in the beds. I've had great results with using leaves as mulch in my 7a Virginia garden. The birds seem to like the more natural leaves vs. mulch and will come take care of overwintering pests like slugs.🐌 I have tons more birds now. I have been mulching exclusively with whole leaves in my extensive borders for several years and have not seen any increase in slugs and snails. I actually seem to have fewer pests, fewer weeds, and for some reason way less leaf spot issues. Also, the leaves have greatly improved my red clay soil. I love those leaves! 🍁🍂🥬

  2. Brenna sure loves to watch you working. Almost like she's supervising! Love the aqua pot arrangement 🙂

  3. Following you and Jerry has been such a valuable resource! Moving "here" from the north, we've struggled with planting here. Now we are stewards of the entire neighborhood! No more dying hanging baskets, learning full sun/part sun, soil amendment, etc. I looked up our agricultural extension and it is Clemson University! They offer so many benefits; species diagnosis, disease diagnosis, plant nutrition etc! Thank you once again! Btw – "Lil Jenny" a/k/a Superbell refuses to go dormant so we decided to try to overwinter her in our garage. Thanks again so much! Happy holidays!!!

  4. Jackson is amazing, such a worker for mom and dad! Loved seeing Mimi, I wish I had half of her energy 😊 Happy Baking and stay warm, this weather is too cold for me in Leesville, South Carolina 🥶

  5. Looks really nice the plants just pop up lots Of good ideas on the leaves. 😊🌺🌺🌺

  6. Love the mahonnia (?spelling) Have you thought about putting a smaller shrub or perennials in the open space and not just shade annuals? Love the pot and grass is a great addition. Jackson is a kick and glad he enjoys operating all the equipment.

  7. It was so funny Jenny I was watching you and then a commercial came on and it was Laura gathering foliage and berries in her garden for a winter project. 😂😂😂
Great video and nice clean up. The pot looks great. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

  8. Love all the natural beauty of your containers. I mulch my leaves and keep them in mulched areas. Leaves in grassy areas are also mulched by mower and left in the grass. Easy peasy.

  9. Jenny, I love seeing Brynna in your videos. She is your dog, always by your side, a constant companion. I would love to be outside cleaning areas up and the like, but not today. It's bone-chilling cold in the teens with constant winds at 20-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Burr!
With Christmas eve only a week away, enjoy your time with family and friends. Merry Christmas to you and your sweet family! ~Margie🤗🎄☃❄

  10. Jenny that aqua pot might freeze and burst. I put pot feet under my concrete pots , so they drain good and don’t freeze to the soil!

  11. Jenny, I love your Cryptomeria branches in your containers for the holidays! Whenever you have your next ‘Porch Chat’ – could you please talk about those trees a bit with info on caring for them (fertilizing, pruning, disease issues, etc)? I live in coastal NC (Zone 8b) and have a couple of those trees in my yard, but after a hurricane several years ago, I think it may have suffered salt water damage (which also affected our crape myrtles) because only the interior sections of both cryptomeria trees died and many of the branches look ‘leggy’. At first I pruned the interior dead branches off, thinking the tree would fill back in from surrounding branches, but instead, I now have gaping ‘holes’ in sections where too much growth has died. I would love to help them ‘bounce back’ if that’s possible, but I don’t know whether to prune all of it way back, leaving it looking really bare and ugly around the bottom section (with ugly little branch stubs around the base of the trunk), or what can be done to keep from having the trees cut down & replaced. They came with the house (full grown and beautiful) when we bought it and we’ve lived here for 13 years now – so I have no idea how old they are or what potential disease issues or or growing sensitivities may be common in this tree. Any suggestions or recommendations from you or Jerry would be very helpful and so appreciated! I’ll be looking forward to hearing everything on the topic in one of your future videos! Merry Christmas to you and your family! 🎄🪴🌳

  12. Hey Jenny. I feel like I got bit by the Epsoma Land and Sea bug but could not find it anywhere. At least now I know that if I want to drive 3 hours I can get it from you. But before I knew that I found Daddy Pete's Farm and Sea and wonder how similar that is to the Land and Sea. It is more available to me in my area but I know that it is made by a NC company so maybe it is not widely available other than the region here. Are you familiar with it?

  13. That compost sure does make a difference! Looks very nice and neat! I love it! Aquapot arrangement turned out very nice as well. I hope ya'll have a wonderful and Merry Christmas week!

  14. Jenny,
What is in the ground to the right of the Aquapot? It looks a bit like a cast iron plant. 🤔
    Thank you! 😊
