Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I’ve learned that your climate and tastes are very different than mine. But I love listening to you talk about seed varieties and the things you love and the things that excite you.

  2. MIgardener is great! Very affordable, and I love that I’m not wasting seeds with them because I’m never gonna plant 100 tomatoes in a season or two. Also love rare seeds for their crazy amounts of options.

  3. (I think it let me sign up finally.)My phone wont let me sign up for your email. Ill keep trying though. I love how you said "you are opening seeds on here because, you love us". We love you too! God bless!

  4. My favorite post — the seen reveal. 🙂 Happy Birthday btw. Celebrate all year. Each day a new day. Each day a gift.

  5. Potentially silly question because I think I already know the answer, but if you don't have a huge garden (less than 100 transplanted starts), do you have to use the smaller cell containers or can you start them in 2.5" or 5" cells?

  6. I don't have a big budget that I can spend on seeds, so I developed a whole strategy 😎
When I get paid, I buy 2-3 packets at the local garden store. Most often, this is how I buy flowers, etc. And then for Yule I treat myself and buy a large amount of heirloom seeds, especially tomatoes. I found a great little association that preserves vintage varieties.
That's how I stock up on everything during the year, it's not a huge expense all at once, and yet I can afford almost everything I want.

  7. I have a local plant nursery that has tons of heirloom tomatoes and peppers. I haven't started plants before and I just don't have time for that. I love the fact that I can fit one or two of several types..

  8. Harvard beets!!! Are the best!

    3 cups cooked beets (sliced)
    1/2 cup sugar
    1 Tbs cornstarch
    1 tsp salt
    1/4 cup vinegar
    1/4 cup water
    2 Tbs butter

    Mix sugar, cornstarch and salt

    Add water and vinegar

Cook and stir together till thick (5min)

    Add beets and butter

Let it sit for 15-30 minutes before eating.

    Heat before eating.

    (Serves 6)

  9. I’m ordering a ton of seeds from baker creek. This will be my 3rd attempt at gardening 😂 I will be trying to grow a bunch of things I’ve never grown before like okra, corn and cucumbers. I live in the desert of AZ,zone 9. Hoping for some success this year!

  10. I try to buy all my seeds from Luke & company…both to support MIGardener and also because who else sells $2 seed packs??

  11. I love this video so much !! Thanks Jess 🤗 I've started to get into trying to get my homestead started & get my garden ready & have started ordering seeds too !! You are the best & thanks for the advice in the last video about taking small steps ! I have a hard time feeling like I'm not where I want to but your advice about small steps really helped calm my soul 🤗 Can't thank you enough for your help !!!

  12. MI Gardener seeds are the best! I planted 2-year-old MI seeds, just as a test, and they grew great! Last season I saved seeds and am anxious to see how well they do this coming season!
