Fumigating the Polytunnel to Kill Overwintering Pests

Winter is here and my polytunnel is in need of some repairs before the weather worsens. In this polytunnel episode I’ll be patching up the holes in my cover and testing out a garlic smoke candle to see if it will kill off the pests inside that could overwinter.

  1. Thank you for the name of the polytunnel company, it looks more sturdy than many. was thinking you wouldn't be able to find the end of the sellotape, it made me laugh when you couldn't 😄

  2. I'm impressed with the smoke candle. It done a good job. I reckon, perhaps another one or two applications would do the business and wipe all the bugs out.

  3. Lol garlic greenhouse hotbox. This is interesting to me bc while I don't have a poly tunnel, I have a lot of flea beetles that appear in my outdoor containers and I want to kill them but not anything beneficial! I'm debating doing nothing vs an organic method.

  4. hi Katrina you n your partner a merry Christmas and new year hope you both have a great Christmas and new year I'll be looking forward to seeing your next video as usual a great video of yours just be careful when your using your step ladder in this cold n wet weather

  5. I had problems this time of year, with deer & rabbits eating the plants on my parents grave. An old local told me to crush 2 cloves of garlic, add boiling water, leave overnight and then spray it all over the plot, plants & soil. So far so good, replacement violas haven't been touched, but it did smell for a few days…and might need doing every couple of weeks or so.

  6. Oh man, I hate when super sticky tape doesn't have a starting tab. I'm thinking maybe try again, when the temps are closer to the suggestion on the container. Ever since I've been watching I've loved that yours has that door, mine just has zipper flaps at each end to roll up, with velcro to hold it, which has long deteriorated. Stay warm, you guys have surely had your share of crazy temps over there.

  7. Neem oil is great for bugs, you can pretty much spray everything with it.

  8. you sound like my aunt with all your environment safe stuff yet here you are in your tent trying to kill all living things that make up our environment. hurting the beneficial bugs is not nice. there are better ways of targeting the pests like aphids

  9. Its the perfect time for jobs like this Katrina. So close to 100k Silver button on the way very shortly. Will say congrats now because it will be here in no time. Great video and hope you all have a great xmas

  10. There are pesticides that are neuro toxins for cold blooded animals and completly without any effect on warm blooded creatures. I use one of them for three years now and they work just perfect with a 100% success rate. No bugs in my flat, no bugs on my plants. Giving the rate how fast bugs can reproduce, killing most of them, but not all of them just buys you time 🙂

  11. Wow, way to stay focus on all garden chores, making your springtime more exciting and ready for all gardening jobs. Wishes you and ours the very best for the holidays and the upcoming year with all your exciting wedding preparations. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊🌲🎅🏻🌲

  12. Nice thumbnail Katrina!
Speaking of garlic bombs, I usually release a few of those after a vindaloo. Happy Xmas!

  13. I've heard of people fumigating houses with chilli powder for killing pet flea problems in carpets in years past but don't know if it was effective. Hopefully this good, deep frosty weather will have have put an end to excessive pesty critters for next year's growing season Tropical migrant insects will not have been able to cope, which is encouraging.

  14. I didn't know you could get polytunnel repair tape so thanks for that! My polytunnel is similar to yours but only 2 years old. Good to know I can repair it if I need to!

  15. Hey Unfortunately you can not consider yourself an organic gardener/A lot of the plants and bulbs you buy are treated with or grown using chemicals in the growing medium.Even veg seeds are treated with chemicals. I must start buying less things from garden centres as when i transplant them i often see those chemical fertiliser balls in the soil

  16. Have you ever tried ordering frozen ladybugs/ladybirds? Apparently you let them thaw when it's time, release them, and hope they stay around your allotment to feast on the aphids!

  17. Merry Christmas when we repair our poly tunnel we put the tape both inside and out as it helps to stick together better

  18. I wonder if the smell of garlic will cling to the polytunnel for a long time after this is used, if so that could deter the insects from reappearing after treatment so it could have better results in spring/summer. looks fun and ill def consider it in the future
