Home Hydraulic Log Splitter Review

Rather than spending hours wielding an axe to split hundreds of logs, I have invested in a hydraulic log splitter to speed up the process and this video shows you how it works and my thoughts on it.

  1. I find that there are times when I need to hold the log down while running the machine so I bought a 15A momentary contact foot pedal switch. The splitter plugs into the foot pedal and the foot pedal plugs into the mains, this frees up one hand.
I think the majority of the noise is coming from the pump, not the motor.

  2. My father always talked of the three warms of wood when you cut the tree down when you cut and split and then the shortest of all when you finally burn it. Lol.
Agree that when the log splits suddenly it's quite fun. Did manage to hit my hand once not too disastrous though.
I tend to use mine on the ground and that can be a pain in the back.

  3. Stuart ive got 5 ton orange one of ebay years ago best thing i did also spend money on the stand.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿบ๐Ÿบ

  4. Sell these splitters where I work and have to agree with your review.
They are good, I've only ever seen one returned within warranty and it was dealt with well.
Totally agree with the assessment of the legs, worth the extra.
    Great stuff Stuart….. As usual

  5. A much cheaper alternative, that would also serve to keep you warm while splitting, is the wood grenade, a four-way wedge that splits logs into quarters and only costs around ยฃ15.

  6. Looks like you've got some serious voltage drop on your supply to that outbuilding!

  7. I used to have a Harbor Freight (USA) 5 ton splitter very much like this splitter. I found only a few logs it couldn't split. For the money, I think it is a good machine for a homeowner. My splitter didn't come with legs or cage. I would usually put it on my truck's tailgate to use.

  8. Would be interesting to see how that would cope with wet hard wood. That stuff you are splitting is so dry you could split it with a toothbrush. Not sure about the exploding logs either. I have a horizontal splitter and it doesn't do anything like that when you use it.

  9. I have had a log splitter for a few years, Mine came with legs which was a huge benifit, but no "length lock" which I might build in. Although I use the full length of the drive to have 2 logs being pushed and then droping the next log in place to push through. The other thing to bear in mind, is, if you are cutting your own wood prior to splitting, you can determine the cut length and stick to that which makes splitting far easier as you don't have to adjust for length. Sharpen the wedge too!

  10. We have a similar one-ton one in our utility room in the house, and it also makes the lights "blink" when you power it on. Those machines must draw out a ton of power.
Use mine on the floor tho, so it's a PITA.

  11. looks like a good way to get knocked in the head with a flying piece of wood .

  12. I have the screwfix version of this & highly recommend it. You really do need to fix it down to a trolley. As you pointed out they are heavy & unstable. I'm thinking about drilling the pusher plate & fitting a short spike as on occasion logs slip sideways on the initial push. Anyone in doubt, these machines are very powerfull & cope with anything I'veput it up against including very knotty logs!

  13. I have a similar splitter, looking into making a stand and it wouldn't be difficult to rig up a foot pedal that clips to the handle ๐Ÿ‘
