Backyard Garden

January Backyard “Garden Tour” :: Northern California Zone 9b

“Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle.” -Luther Burbank

Welcome to my garden! I am hesitant to call this a “garden tour” because there is not much to see in the backyard in January this year! We are focusing on getting some hardscaping done (landscape rock removal) before planting anything else. However, my goal for this year is to be better at documenting my garden in the good times AND the not so good so I can see the progression throughout the year! I hope you all enjoy and hope that you can find some motivation even when your garden is not looking it’s best! 💕

  1. Your yard is so cozy! I love how you have different designated areas. I’d give anything for a 60drgree day 😉😩 it just started snowing! Have a good day friend ♥️🙂

  2. I have the same conditions in my front yard. Shade all day until the last 3 to 4 hours. I found that sweetspire also known as Itea does well. It doesn’t bloom as much as where it gets more sun but it can handle the shade. I have the Little Henry type but there are a lot of other varieties. A bonus for me is they turn a beautiful peachy red in the fall, and if there isn’t any really cold weather I will still have a few leaves in spring. I live in zone 8 b.

  3. Your yards are so beautiful 😍 I can’t wait to see everything in bloom this summer !! Have a great day 🥰🥰

  4. Last year I began obsessed veriegated plants and discovered the veriegated red twig dogwood. I can't wait for mine to grow larger, too. That shady area is a problem, isn't it? As hot as your summers get it would be difficult to find plants to grow there unless you provided shade at the other end. A tree would be a pain with the pool unless it was an orange tree. I hope someone comes up with an idea for you. Enjoy your day.

  5. I’d say foxglove would be a good shade sun plant (if the toxic plants don’t bother you). Also I think calla lilies would do well

  6. I love the idea of adding mulch! We have a couple areas that we are getting rid of the little rocks, such a pain to get rid of but will be so worth it. Loving everything you are doing!

  7. I have a dinnerplate hibiscus and live in zone 9b. I see you’ve cut yours back already. Is it too late to cut back mine now, or should I wait until I see new growth in the spring?

  8. Hi Janey! Your going to have so much more planting space which is so fun!! Thanks for sharing your yard with us 💚 I love living vicariously through you with being outside. It's freezing here in the northeast. Expecting a blizzard this weekend. Can't wait for Spring! Brrr!!

  9. Ha I’m in Davis too, off mace as well. That’s so funny. We are planning on doing a major diy rework of our garden this year.

  10. Could you talk about where you got your greenhouse as well as how you made your Tudor obelisk item that you were talking about

  11. You should maybe make a raised veggie garden in that corner where your wooden benches are. 💗

  12. I like seeing the garden at all of its seasons. It is good for people to learn what different platns look like during the winter season too. You could consider something like blueberries in those two half barrels. They do need a lot of water though.

  13. You may be able to maintain your seating in the corner, put a solar fountain in, and add plants. A fountain would be great for the birds that come to your feeder, and afternoon sun will run it. I’d consider some Coleus for back there to start. As for your containers, maybe look at the combination ideas on the PW website. Great ideas there.
I saw your climbing vines on the fence (beginning of your video) on Garden Answer! 👍

  14. How fun to add more planting space! Enjoy the progress and thank you for sharing and letting us tag along 💚

  15. Thanks for the tour. You zoomed by your beautiful pink cyclamen. They look great! An idea for the barrels-blueberries. An idea for the back shade corner-snowflake viburnum would be pretty.

  16. Appreciate another person gardening in CA Z9B though i am in the Bay Area, east bay hills so do not get summer heat as your area does. Lots of shade as well. Looking forward to following you!

  17. Hi Janie, I watched your video, you have such a pretty yard. I used to live in southern Calif and miss it a bunch. Now living in Ohio for that last 37 years. I wanted to share an idea I had for the corner with the wood furniture. If you are able to build a cover for added shade slanting the roof toward the fence to persuade the leaves perhaps to go that way. Plant some evergreens to create more shade, mixing in some flowering plant for their beauty. Bearing in mind whatever you plant close to the fence you will have to clean leaves out of. Bit of a pain to do that. Also if you could trim the oak tree branches back that hang over the fence. Good luck I will be watching to see what you come up with.
