Edible Gardening

Let's Talk Mushrooms!

Mushrooms are starting to grow around here. Learn about their function, and their function in your garden! Note: in the video I said I believed “What Plants Talk About” was a BBC documentary–I was mistaken–it’s a Nature documentary, which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQLAdZdZMyM

We are in USDA planting zone 9b in California and we grow as much food as we can on our 7,000 square-foot city lot. We have quail, chickens, rabbits, edible landscaping garden, and preserve food.

  1. I picked a lot of what my mom called caulifower mushrooms in the woods next to our home. we also had morels in the same woods but they were scarcer. we didn't have any that grew in our gardens because mom didn't know anything about composting.she always trimmed the mushroom bottoms off and had us spread them in the woods so more would grow the next year. The numbers did increase over the years. I have seen no mushooms in the trailer park but we mostly have a very rocky soil.
