You CHANGED MY MIND! Garden Freeze Preparations || Black Gumbo

In my last video I said goodbye to my vegetable garden as the arctic blast coming today will certainly devastate most of it. I planned to protect my lemon tree but was planning to let the rest of the garden ride the storm out come what may. Many of you did not like that one bit. So I took stock of what supplies I could scrounge up and we’ll try to save a few plants. I’ll also show you the lemon tree process. Hopefully we don’t get a total die-back.

Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!

  1. Central Louisiana here. Spent most of the day wrapping citrus and installing heat lamps. Buckets on the small broccoli and cauliflower. Burlap on the brussell sprouts, celery and cumquats,All in a lite drizzle. Mid 50's now but going to be 15 tonight. Sub 20 weather next few days.I can handle losing some of the garden veggies but I hate losing all the investment in the Meyers lemons satsumas, and oranges Good luck to you.

  2. Question: would it do harm to the tree if you cut those thorns off the citrus? I'm so glad you decided to protect your plants. Hope they make it!

  3. I paid the big bucks for a heated greenhouse and wicking tubs because of temperature extremes.
It was 19°F this morning with a wind chill dropping that by another 14 degrees, but inside the greenhouse, WITHOUT the propane heater on, it was chilly, but nowhere near what it was just the other side of the polycarbonate walls. A good investment, I'd say. Besides, you can't take it with you.

  4. How cold are you going to get? We are going to get down to 16 in middle Georgia for three days. Mulched as much as I could the rest is on it's own.

  5. Oh I'm so happy to hear of your change of mind. It was -10 when I woke up this morning. I'm fretting about my roses. But I've done all I can. Now I just have to wait and see. If you don't try…you will lose most if not all. If you try then you may save some and its worth the effort to try. Can't wait to hear the report. I have to wait until march or april to find out if my roses made it.

  6. Thanks for this advice, Scott! I brought my baby trees (potted) inside and shared your video! Oh, and I need a cutting off that ginger, please!

  7. with the ice cold i put my fig in the garage i might have to replant my lemon grass as its yellow on the ends i might cut it down after i see if it springs back

  8. When I was a kid, we saved a magnolia tree covered with a glaze of ice from freezing rain by tarping over it with some kind of cloth and then lighting a small smudge pot under the "tent". This device was only 4-6 inches in size and the flame size was similar to a candle, not the large smudge pots shown on wikipedia. Unfortunately, as you said, you are lacking the material to use as a tarp. I wish you the best of luck.

  9. I'm in central Illinois. When I got up this morning it was 30° now at 3pm its 8° and dropping. 😳☹ and snowing…its supposed to get better on Christmas eve morning. Stay safe and warm everyone. Sounds like we are all in for it!

  10. Don't give up the fight…. great Scott 💪 Very merry Christmas Man and family!!

  11. Well I was thinking the same so today I stared covering my garden, let’s hope for the best, I think you did the right decision

  12. Scott, great to see you changed your mind. One other possibility. If you have any smaller pots (10 gallon or so). Put them over the colli and broccoli centers then put your 20-gallon black pots over them creating an air cushion. I know — The black pots have drainage holes. Try it anyway. What do you have to lose. PS mound soil around the bottom of the black pots. They seem toooooo wide for the beds to stop the air flow. Ray

  13. my fig tree is in the garage so is my lemon grass but i might have lost the lemongrass but im just gonna wait and see we are in a blizzard here in the missouri plains

  14. You are an inspiration! I paused the video and ran out to put big pots over favorite plants and I put cloth around exposed woody roots and trunks. I got all the tomatoes off my vines and gave them to a passing neighbor. All my 'invited but wild' natives will hopefully bounce back, and my potted perennials are complimenting my Christmas tree nicely rn.
