Breathtaking 19th Century Photos of Old Japan | Restored in HD Color

► In this video we bring you breathtaking 19th century photos of Old Japan on brink of modernization, taken by Suzuki Shinichi in 1870s. The images are colour restored and HD enhanced using latest digital technology.
► In the nineteenth century, Japan was transitioning from the Edo Shogunate Era to the Meiji Imperial Era. Japan began to open its doors to foreign countries and commerce, resulting in rapid industrialization and the adoption of Western ideas and manufacturing methods. This allowed new technologies, including photography, to enter the market.

Foreign photographers began visiting Japan and taking photos, including noted Italian-British photographer Felice Beato. He moved to Yokohama and shot various types of photography including portraiture, landscapes, and cityscapes. With the rising interest in photography, more and more Japanese photographers set up their own studios.

Ueno Hikoma and Shimooka Renjo were among the first professional Japanese photographers who opened their own studios in 1862. One of Shimooka’s pioneering students, Suzuki Shinichi, shot a stunning series of photographs in the 1870s, showing life and culture in Old Japan on the verge of modernisation.

What makes these images even more striking is that they are hand coloured, which sets them apart from standard black and white photos of the time. We’ve chosen a few examples from this series for this video, and we welcome you to see them first in their original format, and then in their restored version, displaying the real beauty of these priceless historical photographs.

  1. Why are these extreme blur filters always used for such "restorations"? People were no more made of wax in the past than they are today.

  2. Yes, stunning. Modernization has been a curse on cultures worldwide. Now everyone dresses the same, profane and classless
