Harvesting Turmeric, How To Grow Turmeric Harvest Time, Vegetable Gardening

A growing process that began back in March with a small crop finally being available to lift, in October.

Nothing technical here other than carefully lifting the Turmeric plants and rhizomes from the compost.

Just in case you want to check out the growing process right from the beginning I have attached the links below for parts 1 and 2 of How To Grow Turmeric In The U.K.

  1. I must try growing turmeric. We use it in our cooking everyday. I tried growing ginger a few years ago but was very unsuccessful

  2. Brilliant result but why do you need to dry them a little before replanting? The roots looked crowded & compacted but the soil did not seem wet. Was it something to do with the rotten sections you had to cut out as per the advice you gave me on my browning elephant ears tubers. ( Btw, I now have 18 strong & healthy plants instead of 3 with rampant root rot, so it was cracking advice & my Mother’s plants which I inherited, have never looked better, so thank you).

  3. Interesting. Did you keep them inside all summer? What sort of temperatures do they like? Where did they actually grow? In the past I have grown ginger on a sunny window sill but I did not get much extra extra edible root. It was more of a conversation piece. People thought it was bamboo. Did you use tubers from a food shop, I think they sell them at one of the Asian supermarkets.

  4. Would you consider leaving the leaves and stalk on to see if it makes bigger tubers? I'm wondering if they are like daffs and need the greenery left on to feed the bulbs, turmeric rhizomes.
