Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. G’day Everyone, and Merry Christmas! We seem to be living in a world that’s slowly going nuts. Still, for me, all I need to do is read through the 1000’s of comments/messages/emails I get from supporters of my Channel to realise, in fact, the world is full of beautiful people who do their best to help and encourage others to succeed at whatever goal they are trying to achieve. Thank you for your support over the past 12 months – I really mean it – your encouragement has inspired me to grow more (not just in the garden) but as a person too. Yeah, I know, as cliché as it is… Seriously, I love creating content about self-sufficiency and lifestyle in general and although for “various reasons”, I haven’t uploaded as much in 2022 as I wanted, be assured I am keen as ever to bring you fresh, exciting videos with some real surprises in 2023. From myself, Nina, and the Boys, I wish you a happy and safe festive period and look forward to “getting into it” with you again soon in the New Year. Cheers, Mark 😊

  2. Thanks Mark merry Christmas 🌲
By your knowledge and inspiration i have some of these beds with wood in the bottom and they are such a rich ecosystem for our favourite food plants.. and just a little sustainable health giving pastime. Thankyou 🌻🌻

  3. Merry Christmas to you and your family 🎄. Thank you for the brilliant content/tip's, it's always such a pleasure to watch.

  4. All good said and done . You say its great organic soil composition .. but have you done a soil test on it to confirm how good this is ?
probably not .. Just dont say stuff, untill you get it analyzed. Facts are everything

  5. My neighbour owns a tree lopping business and he spread wood chip a foot deep over all his pastures with lime. Now they are covered with grass and looking great.
I get free woodchip off him also, which is nice.

  6. Hi Mark. I'm surprised by the number of people who have come across the problem of the sides of Birdie's RGBs bowing in. My 2.5 x 1.2 metre beds were supplied with four braces rather than the six you have on yours so I didn't have to dig down to the base to remedy the problem. I used logs across the beds under the braces rather than have to remove & replace them as I would have to have done if using vertical timber supports with holes drilled in them. Anyway… Best wishes for yourself, Nina and the boys for Christmas and the New Year. Cheers, Shin

  7. Lol omigoodness something set the kookaburras off! I love hearing them! 💕 Beautiful music to these North American ears.

  8. Thanks!! Great video. Another reason for using woodchip rather than imported garden mix type soil, is with the latter you run the risk of pyralid weedkiller being present in the soil/compost. This happened to me in 5 garden beds and its taken 3 years for them to come right.

  9. Great video, thx. Maybe instead of wood braces, you could put star pickets?

  10. I'm 54 and I and my wife earn $15,000 bi-weekly returns from our digital assets portfolio but we are VERY worried about our future because of the gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings up high with the cost of living into the stratosphere, we are finding it impossible to retire. We can get by, but cant seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for…

  11. How did you find your nitrogen levels in the beds which has big logs and woodchip breaking down in the base? Cheers!

  12. Merry Christmas my dear friend. I have learned so much from your experience in gardening. Thank you very much.

  13. Hi Mark
    Am from Saudi Arabia
I want to ask u hiw to fix the mulch in windy days coz I have a problem with that

  14. Hi Mark, I just wanted to mention that one of your followers made a comment after your vid re composting shredded paper which I thought was a quite brilliant idea and that was that when you wanted to speed up the composting process that you "germinate" the new compost by adding some previously composted soil with all its growing bacteria as a kick start to the newer composting soil. Do you think this is a good idea? 🤔❤👍🌲🎄🎈🍒🍓🥝🫐🍅🥑🍆🥔🥕🌽🌶🫑🥒🥬🧄🧅

  15. Merry Christmas Master 💪 happy holidays with family and very thanks a lot!!!
