Winter Pruning my 60th Birthday Scots Pine, The Bonsai Zone, Dec 2022

I’m giving my 60th birthday Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) a winter prune to sort out the branches and to get the tree more compact.

  1. First Happy Holiday’s Nigel. Love your birthday pine. My question is any plans for the removing of some or all of what I call “ the explosion of dead wood” on the trunk ? It kinda takes your eye off the flow of the trunk line as you look at the tree. Sorry if I offend anyone with this question. Not my intention

  2. Fantastic work on your birthday pine Nigel! Dave is right – you will remain 60 forever working on this tree! 🤣😂🐦💙

  3. Nigel, If this tree could talk I imagine it would be saying "thank you" for starting its journey to becoming a beautiful bonsai. Excellent work on this pine.

  4. Interesting tree. Scots Pines have no idea of the conventions of bonsai… That great spurt of dead stuff on the current rhs is distracting and needs to be resolved. Then again, it's a Scots Pine and stuff happens.

  5. I can feel your angst, then elation when you see the results. Thank you for helping me gain the courage to make big cuts on my own trees (for their own good!).

  6. Good decision on removing that upper thick branch. I might have removed it completely. I'd consider timing point 50:42 or 50:47 as a possible front. I appreciate the natural look as well. Good work Nigel!

  7. Your birthday tree is Epic. Great video, I enjoy seeing you make the decisions and talk about why. Very helpful.

  8. it looks like Frankenstein is frowning down at your sculpting work, Nigel! the architecture is truly taking shape… a great start to a worthy tree!

  9. Nigel, my humble opinion for the front is the main feature of the tree—the deadwood. At 36:26 that the best looking face. Another great rambling.

  10. It's interesting to see the comments about the "explosion" of deadwood being a distraction and unnatural… As if Ray grafted all of those on there. Lol
It's as if the word "natural" has lost it's meaning.

  11. Looking forward to the future of this tree I hope you have a wonderful new year for you and your family🎉

  12. Dude you need to wire the side branches, and get some significant light to them, also hoarding the dead branches turn them into Jin or clip them off. If you want them to get a bonsai form you have to wire or at least guide wire them and get the mess off it of make it a focal point. The clipping wo wiring first is ridiculous
