My favorite products are those that offer a win-win. Like an EV that you can use to drive around, and also to power your home when it’s parked. And while a roof is a vital part of protecting you and your home from the weather, what if there was a way it could do even more? Well, 3M is working on a new roofing shingle granule for asphalt shingles, that can reduce the smog in your air, and convert it into plant fertilizer! So how does it work, and should you be asking for a smog-reducing shingle on your next roof? Let’s find out!

  1. Interesting, yes – but water soluble nitrogen is not necessarily a good thing; and might be a very bad thing. We use a LOT of this kind of fertilizer – in agriculture and lawns, etc. And it is what is causing algae blooms, and dead zones in the ocean – AND it ends up as nitrous oxide. Which is many times worse than methane as a GHG.

  2. I wonder how long the granuals remain active before they need a rinse. In CA or AZ it can be several months between rain storms.
Also, will all those nitrates going into the water system just move the problem to the waterways and oceans?

  3. Sounds like an awesome idea, but I think the EV revolution will make smog a thing of the past, therefore a 10-year lifespan ought to be enough…

  4. LOL @ 1:28 Reminds me of when my sister as a late teen said "Wow this watermelon is really watery. Wait a minute…WATERmelon!" lmao

  5. Grrr that 3M is guarding their environmentally beneficial roofing formula. Wish they were like Colgate. They created the world’s first recyclable toothpaste tube, and then shared the patent with their competitors.

  6. Short, but very good one – I wonder how would this interact with green roofs. Spreading the granules next into the flower bed. I would worry a bit that it will create nitric acid and kill the plants. But I guess 3M would think of this during their research cycle…

  7. The figure of 7M deaths per year includes a large proportion who die due to indoor smoke, typically from cooking fires in the developing world.

  8. I did a study: WHITE roofs vs asphalt Black, does not the color, back in 1975 in LA, can make temperature in the summer go down at lest 15 degrees when it is the hottest. Just think of a coating that would fertilize the yards!

  9. Investing in cryptocurrency now should be in every wise individuals list, in some months time you'll be ecstatic with the decision you made today.

  10. So many questions still need to be answered. Most water in most countries running off roofs goes into the ocean(more fertiliser dead zones)? Could this water still be used for storage and drinking water? What's the effectiveness of PV solar on the roof? Will it keep working over the summer if no rain happens for months?

  11. I can’t believe a thing you say because you are just a shill for 3m, at least for this video.

  12. ok, interesting idea but too much fertilizer is a bad thing especially if it ends up in storm sewers or catchments.

  13. I'd rather we stop polluting in the first place, but this is a damned good start. This material would make a good garden topdressing (spread on the surface of the ground like mulch, to expose it to sunlight).

  14. I'm guessing not many people in America have water tanks used for drinking water attached to their roof.

  15. Nitrate salts…hmm sounds familiar. Oh yeah. I wonder how many burning roofs or pipe bombs it would take to get the atf make this illegal or a owners registry

  16. Had no idea 3M had roofing shingles. Their just not the big dog in that space like they are in other industries. Will a rainwater collection system be needed? I know many municipalities will not want that stuff as runoff down in drains or waterways.

  17. Years ago, I conceptualized TiO2 to concrete road material…possibly a coating for asphalt… Converting emissions about as close to source as is possible…

  18. Thanks Ricky for a really interesting video – I was not aware of this technology in roofing – it looks like a really good idea! But, I hope that we don't decide that this is a replacement for trees – nothing beats a tree for all of the benefits that it provides and cleansing the air is just one of them…All the best to you and yours as you continue your journey into the new year and I am looking forward to your next video 👍🙂

  19. You've clearly never heard of The Great Smog of London in December 1952, which caused an estimated 10,000 deaths. (But, unlike me, you're far too young to have been around at the time! 😀). The word 'smog' was coined (according to Google) in London in 1905 by a physician, Harold Des Veaux.
I love your videos, Ricki: keep up the good work.

  20. This stuff reacts with sunlight to form strong oxidizers; How much does this increase the risk of your roof catching fire?

  21. Sounds great, but will the UV needed get through the smog? And how are you supposed to get the nitrates in any usable dilution out of your rain water drain?
