  1. So a few more points to go along with this really important vid:
    1. Yes I was likely just eating a Christmas cookie just before filming this so no I don’t have some weird disease on my lip lol.
    2. The reindeer in the background of my desk absolutely frightens my daughter and him being right there and nowhere else makes her feel safe. #toddlerlife
    3. The tricky dagger brushes I touched on in the vid are those that either aren’t 100% synthetic and/or have a bristle length longer that about ¾ inches. The specific design of my brushes makes you feel very much in control of your strokes, even as a beginner
    4. My palette recommendation is also for another BIG reason…IF you aren’t ready to dive into complicated color theory or mixing at the beginning of your watercolor journey (which I really recommend you don’t), my palette offers the most fun and inspiring color collection that won’t leave you wanting if you don’t mix!

  2. That Baohong Academy paper is a godsend. People like to throw out the words "student grade" like it's some sort of curse and you'll never have any success using products labeled as such, but I strongly beg to differ. I paint a lot of landscapes with big juicy wet background washes, and that paper just keeps taking all the water I throw at it. I can scrub out and lift pigment without it pilling up, and it has just the right amount of texture to create really interesting foliage effects, but not so much that I can't go in and add some fine detailing when needed. And being able to get a block of 20 sheets for half the price of a block of 12 to 15 sheets? Uh, yes please.

  3. That's what I started with kristy. My teens jack richeson semi moist pallette that came in a christmas gift he never used, and dollar general watercolor paper. That was 3 years ago and I've come a long way since then.

  4. Love love love the dagger. My HL daggers are worse for the wear…I am trying to keep my purse tight in 2023 and use up what I have before I buy more. 😊

  5. I don't know why, but I absolutely felt pain in my heart when you said, "bring out the phone book or a paper bag to paint on." I know that your whole entire intent and being is to paint with joy But, I think because when I was little (8-10 years old), and my parents were both at work, and my brother was at a friend's house, and I was home all by myself… Obviously I couldn't go shopping… So, I would find things around the house to create art with. So, those things that you mentioned… were my go to, back in the day. It so sad to think that there are people that seriously can't afford to buy the "proper" tools, so they make do with what they got. I think I even used a cloth just to rub paint on a project once. Obviously after my kindergarten fiasco with watercolor, I never tried this with watercolor… However, you know what? I even painted with food coloring once, because I didn't own paints and I wanted to attain a painted look on something. I just don't remember what exactly it was. I think I created sculptures out of Flour, water and salt, because I didn't have clay. Once I learned how to paper mache in school (10 years old), I did the same concept with water, flour and the white pages. I recall making paste once out of rice, because I needed to complete a school project, and I didn't have a glue stick or glue at home. That was another time my parents weren't home. Wasn't Gen-X a great generation!?!? LOL!!! I think we are stronger people with grit, because we had the hard knocks in life and just learned how to make do with what we had!!!
