  1. Hi Janey I'm so happy you consulted an arborist. My first house had beautiful very mature trees. It was a nightmare. The arborist had to get permits from the city and close my street for 2 days to remove one. It's so important to chose the right tree for your property. I feel your pain with all this rain.

  2. Good morning Janey. Everything looks lovely despite the big rain out. Sorry to hear about that tree coming down. Take heart – into everyone's life a little rain must fall now and then. 💖👍

  3. Janey sorry about your trees. thanks for the offsite cut flower bed update. I have been wondering about that flower bed. Would it be possible to take broken down cardboard to lay down in the isles for you to walk on while the ground is so soggy to keep you from sinking in so much to give you a little bit stability to work on? it might be worth a try. A word to the wise always carry an extra pair of shoes especially when wearing those type of boots!

  4. It is a sad day when we realize we have to remove a tree. Sorry about the birch trees, but know that in our area birch trees are generally short lived…20 years is about as long as most people will get out of one. They are so pretty, but short lived here. Reality of gardening where we are. There ARE quite a few options you can consider instead for replanting. But they will be happier if you DO NOT concrete your entire side yard. I know paving the whole thing over seems like a good idea, but having some permeable surfaces and added space for gardening along the fence will be a better long term solution for a gardener who is running out of garden space and for mature landscaping on the street side. You may not have a vision for how the side yard can function, but I do! And you will, too, if you leave some options open. Trees planted on the outside of the fence will appreciate having permeable surfaces on the other side of the fence.
Have fun picking out new trees – the master gardener program will help you get a handle on the appropriate choices. Good luck! And try thinking of it as an opportunity for something new and lovely to come into your life.

  5. Isn’t this weather just crazy! We are losing trees, too. And my poor gardens are getting ravaged by the winds. 🥲 But, I hope the rain keeps coming. Dreaming of an end to our drought! So sorry about your Birch tree. 🌳M

  6. Hi Janey it’s so nice having your videos back each morning 😊 This rain is insane right?! Wow, I learned last winter when the rain comes the WEEDS THRIVE 😂 and keep thriving! Our backyard reminds me of the area your flower field is. Our entire yard was green, it was pretty at first but omg those weeds… 😂 anyway hope you guys stay safe these next 10+ days of rain❤ We’re in Colusa county and our house is literally across the street from the Sacramento River so fingers crossed 🤞🏼 we all stay safe. We’re up to our ankles in mud too😂

  7. Happy New Year, Janey. Hope you all had a Christmas as well !! Crazy to see how green everything is. Can't believe how much rain you have had. Too bad about the birch trees.
Good luck with everything in 2023. You definitely have the right attitude for it 🙂
    Cheers Jason and Colleen 🌱🌱🌱

  8. Claus Dalby those bulbs! Can you imagine how stunning they’ll look?! Nothing ventured nothing gained 🙏🏼 Que the Finding Nemo song… Just keep planting! Just keep plant!

  9. So sorry about your birtch trees. Put blame where it’s due. I can only imagine how many tress that tree trimmer is destroying. Here in Texas it’s a huge problem where people are topping off all kinds of trees. Especially crepe myrtles. It looks so horrible and delays blooms, weakens limbs etc. I don’t know why this type of pruning is so popular. I’m so glad you hired a certified arborist. I’m sure you’ll come up with something beautiful.

  10. I'm sorry you'll be losing your trees. Birch are water loving and do well near rivers, creeks, lakes and ponds. I'm not far from you in Brentwood, we planted 3 Birch trees 24 years ago and the severe drought over the years took a toll on them. We had to have them removed by an arborist last year. I miss them and I'm glad we got to enjoy them for so long, we now we have a pollinator garden in the same spot. I hope you find something else for that area that will bring you joy☺🌻

  11. Bummer about your birch tree! The one on the side I think will look better removed. Have you thought about pavers on the side? I have no room for a Birch tree, even though I love the look of there trunks.

  12. I’m in South Florida and too much rain isn’t good. Plants will die if you don’t get a break and the sun comes out. Plus mold mildew yuck. Hope your car doesn’t get stuck. 😊

  13. Happy New Year Janey,! Sad to hear about the birch trees. You may want to consider using the trucks of the trees as yard art in your garden. Maybe laying the trunks down under the oak tree garden bed or your shade garden in the backyard. and planting around them. Good Luck with the removal and figuring out new plans for those spaces.

  14. I’m so sorry about your birch tree! A few years ago we had 2 absolutely gorgeous birch in my front yard that destroyed by bores and fell during a storm, just devastating. But now I’m working on a whole new design. I know you will find something that will be just as beautiful. 😊

  15. No we cannot control nature! But our gardening bodies are itching to work in the dirt. But think of the positive – rain is a blessing for the drought areas! Us gardeners will pivot and do what we can with Mother Nature. Good luck Janey!

  16. Janey, I would keep some of the birch tree branches. You can use them in pot arrangements. They look beautiful and add interest to your pots.

  17. Hi Janey,
It’s hard loosing trees. 😢. Save some branches and bark to use in future design projects. Once the trees are removed, with your creativity, you’ll create something wonderful! ….Adding more bulbs to full sun beds/pots around your home would be stunning!! How is the ‘wild flower garden’ progressing? Thank you for reminding us all to find joy in the gardening journey. 💐

  18. I live in South Carolina and our average rainfall is between 46-48” per year. We just had a Tornado watch and Thunderstorms 2 days in a row and got 5-6” of rain. which is normal here.

  19. I'm in the same situation as you. I have bulbs to plant, flower and lettuce seedlings to transplant, and garlic to plant. I also want to plant some seeds in ground, but afraid they'll just wash away. In the meantime, the weeds are loving it and growing like crazy!!! 🤦🏼‍♀️

  20. So sorry about your Birch trees. I knew the one along side of your house should come out, but I'm really sorry about the other one. There must be something you can plant there. There are multitudes of crepe myrtles so maybe there is one that would work in that narrow space. Did the arborist have any suggestions?

  21. First of all thank you Janey for including the metric system in your measurements, that’s so considerate! So sorry about the birches, the one in your side yard was really planted in the wrong place but to lose the other as well! 😢. ❤ your content and your attitude to life’s ups and downs! 🇨🇦

  22. Losing your birch trees is sad but a new opportunity for something else beautiful. My first thought about your birch in the cottage garden was climbing roses! Also a lot of people would be interested in "birch logs" from your tree branches for decorating. You could offer them for free or even make a little cash (for more plants of course!)

  23. Janey , Cali needs it so bad. And you only get it this time of year. It’s transitioning from a triple La Niña to an El Niño which makes the Pacific warmer. Lived there for 50 years, enjoy the rain.

  24. Oh my! That is very deep mud! I can't believe you walked in your socks through the wet, lol! Not much choice though. I hope you got nice and cozy at home after with a hot cup of your favorite beverage. 🍵

  25. I am so sorry about your trees. Perhaps you could put in a large hedge of some type and keep it trimmed as a small multi truck tree. My Mother in law has a Chinese Fringe shrub that was about 15 ft tall and trimmed up like a tree. Also if you need to walk on soggy ground you could take two strips of plywood to walk on. We do this when we have to drive the tractor over soggy areas and don’t want ruts in the lawn. I hope you have a great day.

  26. Why don’t you consider planting your bulbs in planters, they will grow beautifully in them. Sorry about your birch trees, that’s a bummer 🙁 You had a ruff day, get warm, have some wine, and relax 😊

  27. This rainy weather has been a blessing and a hindrance!! I miss the sunny weather but all of my plants have been drinking so well.

  28. Single trunk crape myrtle in a diff flowering color than your multi stem

  29. I live in the suburb of LA and this kind of wetness is new to me! 😅 Doesn't your cottage garden get part sun? Why not try a beautiful japanese maple? I bought a 6 ft tall bloodgood from HD last year for $80 around this time. Or maybe try a calofornia native like the California Lilac, Ceonothus? Possibilities are endless!

  30. I have a vole(s) destroying my lawn and garden area at this time. I have never experienced their destruction but that little booger or boogers mean business and I have to get this handled. I have a very large yard and it is having a ball. I have a trap set but it is so wet and it is going to freeze again here in central Indiana. I will see how much damage it does before I get it or them under wraps. Nature is always unpredictable. I feel your pain. Happy Gardening!!

  31. I feel you about the rain! Same thing going on two hours north of you here in Chico. When the outside Birch tree goes away, maybe a Blue Puffball Chaste Shrub, or a Purple Pillar (? ) Rose of Sharon from Proven Winners would work there? They do well in our zone 9, and both would go with a cottage garden.
