Thanks for sharing …. I bought and planted an At Last Rose this past fall and just noticed that something ate it to the ground … I now suspect that it could have been a bunny … maybe a deer …. However I am wondering if it will survive …. do you have any knowledge on that ….. ???
I am phasing out my macrophylla hydrangeas because we always get a late freeze which destroys the blooms for that year. More room for other beauties.
Sometimes I wanna punt bunnies like footballs for chomping up everything…but as they hop away their lil cotton tails look so cute so I let them live 🙄
Enjoyed this winter garden tour! Your experience, esp. with the Nandina really shows the effect of things such as microclimate in our gardens. If a plant is struggling, I'll usually try moving it before giving up on it as you just never know 🙂
Where did you get your hellebore plugs from? I’m wanting to incorporate some into my garden.
My abelias lost all leaves in -17 2 yrs ago, came back just fine!
Good morning from north bama 7b some plants took it on the chin here we hit 3 here south of huntsville 3 nites single digets 2 teen nights that’s unusual cold for here but I have tea olive jasmine vine and some Indian Hawthorne s that look bad but march April will tell the fate even some people have heavy damage on camelias my fall blooming Camelia looks good so far glad to see u back on
I have 3 Arctic Sun dogwoods from GGP, too. I love the stem color even more than Arctic Fire. I also cover a lot of my perennials and small shrubs with those chicken wire cloches to protect from rabbits and deer. They were a great find. I need to get more because something is eating my Ground Hug Aronia that I planted on a slope to control erosion but they never get to grow so I think I need to cover them, as well. I also have Brass Buckles; they came through the cold fine but now I am worried seeing yours. I'm in zone 7a but last winter was so much colder than normal around here you never know what's going to happen anymore.
We are in zone 7b and I am also concerned about damage from the arctic blast. Only time will tell.
I am starting to think that the cold hardiness listed on plant tags are extrapolations. There are only so many fields that the plants can be tested and thereby, microclimates evaluated. The trick is therefore trying to determine which are marginal IMHO. For example, Japanese plum yews are really thriving here – in Zone 6A New England
Most gardens have microclimates where a gardener can experiment with a plant a half zone lower or higher, but I wouldn't want to experient with expensive plants.
I love the garden , where are you in zone 6 ? I’m in zone 6 A in Michigan & I can’t go outside in a t shirt 👚 even in the 60 degrees we had the other day without shivering 🥶
I'm not as brave as you yet. I haven't gone out yet to survey any damages. I'll wait till spring time and that can backfire on me as well. As well as you know, our spring can be very nice and things will bud out and then boom we have a horrific freeze…….crazy! It seems difficult to keep things alive here in the last few years but I have a lot of hope that everything made it through and wishing for a nice and beautiful spring. Enjoyed seeing your winter yard of plants.
