Backyard Garden

Doc Block's TROPICAL BACKYARD Paradise Tour — Ep. 301

If you’re into Aroids, then you may have heard Doc Block’s name here and there—since there are some of his hybrids on the market (e.g., Anthurium ‘Michelle’) and even some plants named after him (though by the courtesy of other folks). However, he has quite a penchant for a range plants, and has turned his Florida residence into a backyard paradise of palms, ferns, cycads, aroids, and more.

We paid a visit to his home after the cold snap in Florida and took a tour through the land. (This is part 1 of a two-part series).

  1. Is this in Redland? I live in Ft. Lauderdale area and love going there. It’s like country in a Miami. I want to landscape my front yard. I have the plants, I just need the inspiration on how. The next time I see a pony tail palm at Lowes discount for $7.00, I’m getting it! The orchid festival is this weekend in Miami!

  2. Exquisite! Love these tours. Chad's tour at Fairchild is my favorite relaxation video to date. Looking forward to more content featuring him.

  3. Wow! What an amazing property. I was so excited to see all those species growing and thriving outdoors! Thank you for sharing this wonderful tour. Doc Block was a fountain of knowledge about all his plants.

  4. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Ms. Summer could revisit the garden when it’s in full bloom ! ❄️💚🙃

  5. What a fantastic interview and garden tour! Thank you so much for shining a light on this wonderful space.

  6. Love this video! I'll be looking up a lot of these plants to see what I can grow. I'm 9b but very close to 10a in FL. Any plans on going to Central Florida? I'd love to see that. It would give me even more ideas for my yard.

  7. Greetings Summer.
    Thank You!!!!
This is my first time seeing MEDILLINA’s viewed / featured in a Video.
I have a few, indoors and they look really challenged.
Can you please give me some care tips?!?
    Have a fantastic day!
    Freda

  8. big thanks to dr. block for allowing us to tour. loved seeing all the stuff i use to grow when i lived in south florida. the medinilla on the rock wall was awesome, we use to grow them right in the tops of big platyceriums. speaking of platyceriums the coronarium is outstanding! we use to grow dendrobium, oncidium and phalaenopsis orchids in a similar fashion covering the trunks of trees and they really are spectacular when they bloom. thanks summer for another great tour.

  9. hmm is he fertilizer the area ? no way the foreground plants and tree are growing so well , the land is so fertile

  10. I really love when you make videos like this. You are so good at doing interviews. It would also be fun if you could visit private collection at peoples homes like you did before 🥰

  11. I can tell he loves to teach. Answers a question with a full explanation. Wonderful video and interview subject. Very generous of Dr.Block to allow us into his property and share his knowledge 💚

  12. I smell part 2 😉 I wish you also do a few episodes with Frenchman Patrick Blanc and his home and world projects on vertical gardens that's like art master pieces looking up please 🙏 soon …

  13. I’m only about 12 minutes in and I’m already in love with Doc Block! I could listen to him all day. He’s so knowledgeable and his voice is calming to me. This is a WONDERFUL video!!!

  14. What a beautiful space. I'm in St Petersburg FL & just started working on landscaping my property a few years ago. If my space looks even a quarter like this in 20 years I'd be happy.

  15. An extraordinary garden, thanks so much for doing this tour and sharing! That tree of life is gorgeous with wonderful story and look! How big is this paradise garden?

  16. Thank you for this great garden tour video Summer, so.informative and inspiring as usual. I have one comment though if I may. As I'm from Indonesia, when you mentioned about Medinilla Greg Hambali new official species name, you made a quick comment about dethrone and how if you were Greg Hambali, he will turn in his grave.
But the fact is, he is still very much alive and healthy here in Indonesia, and still active as one of our most prestigious holticulturist. I just feel the needs to clarify this misinformation though. 🙏😊

  17. There’s loads of mature avocado trees growing outdoors in London in people’s backyards that bears lots of fruit which is amazing.

  18. Ohhh my heart blows with so much beauty!!!
Thank you for showing it to us💜 and to Dr Block to allow us to watch this piece of paradise he grown so wisely and carefully. 💜💜💜

  19. I can really feel Summer's excitement while touring this garden 😍 Rightfully so! This was so beautiful to see.

  20. Charming (and quite the climate contrast to FFL). Don't think I've ever seen a garden (park?), like it. The caudex is magnificent. The conifer (who knew?) Cultivated landscape, cultivated people.

  21. Wow, this is by far… one of my favorite videos of POOM! O M G! I’m B L O W N A W A Y!!! THAT, was a TOUR of all TOURS!!! Yes, thank you, Dr. Block, SRO and Sander(?).
