No, I didn't kill them…

A client wanted a mature stand of azalea shrubs cut back for an upcoming party. After discussing the options with the client, they opted for a hard cut back. When doing this in my neck of the woods it is important to remember that you will be left with sticks for several months until the plants start regrowing during spring. The client was OK with this.

A common response to videos like this is ‘wow, you totally killed those hedges’. While I can’t vouch for the flora in your area, I can 100% state with a certainty I did not kill these hedges. They will bounce back in the spring and start sending off shoots from where they were cut.

While not the same hedge, I submit for your consideration the following videos that showcase this principle:

This project started with the DeWalt cordless pruners to open up a spot in the hedges to work. Once that was done a TORO 60V chainsaw was used to cut down all the growth. My wife was a huge help in loading the trailer and moving debris as it was being cut. The CarryOn Trailer we use has 2 foot mesh sides which are short enough to reach into from the street (a must as it carries my lawn care stick equipment) but also gives a lot more wall/storage potential than a standard utility trailer. A Ventrac Power Bucket (HE482) was used to move the debris around a vacant lot we use for processing, and the Ventrac Tough Cut (HQ682) was used to process the growth into a much smaller pile that will be disposed of in the future.

  1. That is I need s to be done to get them in decent shape that needs to be done in any type of bush that gets like that which y out of shape

  2. I absolutely hate azaleas, they literally do nothing but take up space. They bloom for two weeks out of the year and the rest of the year it just grows.

  3. Just curious: Why didn't you leave that brush out for the garbage/town brush pickup like you usually do?

  4. Great video. Just one small thing I wanted to point out: the choice of music for the first bit was a bit odd. It always depends on personal preference but I like your videos because they are relaxing and you always had some great and easy going background music in the past. Just thought I'd point that out in a constructive way 🙂

  5. @ 5:52 Brad, why don't connect the red and yellow caps and plugs of the hydraulic lines together after you connect the quick disconnect hoses? It would help keep the dirt out of them.

  6. The Ventrac in skinny mode. I would like to see a video on how easy or hard it is to change from 4 wheels to 8 wheels setup.

  7. Awesome video. At least you didn't have to pay to take the brush to the dump. That mulch deck sure throws objects/brush all around. Definitely be cautious around windows. Looks good. 👍

  8. Good work lawn you te Best friend thans the video 🛻🪤👍🎧🪚🧹🌾🌳✅🥤🚜

  9. I have abelia bushes in front of my house that I do this to every few years. They look like the remnants of a nuclear attack when I'm done, but they come right back in the spring. Same with heavenly bamboo. You can't kill that stuff if you want to. Time to invest in a chipper, maybe? 😁

  10. Never seen such a patch of azaleas. But, that lot is so big I was wondering why shaping and leaving wouldn't work. To each his own. Nice video!!!

  11. I was watching this video and my computer froze. Hadn't known azaleas could be cut-back that much, but in any landscape, a plant can reach the point of needing to be cut-back or removed. Mulching was an interesting choice for handling the brush remainder. Liked your reminder that safety glasses can be important whether or not the machine is running, as squirting fluids. Thought having lighting was good, so you can work late or whatever is needed. Impressed you figured-out a repair on the bent part.

  12. What I had my landscape business I had a cure-all to fix all I rented a 1-acre wooded lot and they said I could clear it out some the owner went on the property after about 2 weeks and blew a gasket cuz I was just dumping my yard waste out there how is Young and lazy but I bought a used wood chipper and built some compost buckets I would go out there every Saturday chip up the bushes and branches and mix the grass into the piles it was a hot mess the first year cuz it was a guessing game the following year it was my most profitable side Hustle selling all the compost
