In today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share the first 3 plants you should start from seed every January. Growing plants from seeds is a great way to save money, and plants grow better than store bought transplants because they’re better adapted to your environment. These are the first seed starts I begin each year. Start these 3 plants from seed NOW!
Onions, shallots and leeks are the first vegetable seeds I start each year, because they require transplanting early in the spring once the ground is workable and the truly hard freezes stop. I give transplanting dates in this video, but please be advised you’ll need to alter them based on your location. I’m on the NC coast, so if you’re well north or west of me, you may need to start seeds a couple weeks later.

As someone who moved to NC from Riverside Ca, I appreciate this video! You cover a lot for a 2 minute video.
Thanks for the reminder. I'm probably on a similar schedule here in coastal Texas. Time to dig through some seeds!
Thank you MG! Perfect timing! 😊👍
I'm incredibly unsuccessful at transplants from those trays.
I use peat pots now.. and I peel that allegedly biodegradable netting off when I plant.
Since I'm going mostly in containers this year, I am starting some seed in containers that they can stay in to maturity.
Nice! Onion time for me too!💃
I like 2 minute tips!
Thanks 😊
I'm zone 6a and last frost is mid to late May..
I planted green and bunching onions in October, and they were completely unfazed by 12 degrees and 6 inches of snow.
I'm going to start the year with growing some chickpeas. raw, fresh green chickpeas are a delicious snack. definitely worth growing.
