Backyard Garden

One of the things that has really helped our family reduce food waste is by buying a freeze dryer. We used to throw fruit and produce away and often times not want to eat chili leftovers, now we freeze dry it rather than throwing it out. I’m freeze drying some fruit for a family member today to reduce their waste as well. During gardening season it helps preserve the harvest and reduces the amount of canning I need to do.
It seems like a large expense but it has reduced our waste tremendously and helps to build our long term food storage, after having one for over a year I now consider it an essential appliance.

When I worked at a family owned restaurant, I used to be the dishwasher.
People would leave tons of food un eaten.
I would bag the leftovers and bring them home to my chickens. Talk about happy birds!
Thanks for these tips God bless you
We freeze our tomato paste in ice cubes. We also freeze tomato sauce and we freeze milk in Gatorade bottles! We rarely toss a thing and yes we have a large pantry, but we organize our pantry according to dates not buy items
take a look at the dumpster divers one at the audi srtores
In my family of 8 we try to reuse everything. I like some of your ideas. Especially the pickled red onions. I hadn't thought of that. They just go in a freezer bag for stock. I also go to a local food bank that is called zero waste. They give herbs, veggies and fruits that can be worked up and saved for later. Also this week got lots of frozen breads from the deli, and I got lucky and my box had a whole frozen deli chicken from Walmart. They corn, I took that day and cut off the 2 ears. We had potato soup in the fridge so I turned that into corn chowder for supper that night.
I look forward to reading other suggestions in the comments.
I Google substitutions quiet often. I was baking cookies and discovered I didn't have vanilla extract, so I substituted it with bourbon. Gave those cookies a special glow. So thanks for the info, very informative.
What do you think about putting a Sam’s roasted chicken leftover carcass in a pot to make soup? It seems a shame to toss in the trash while there are still bits of meat still on the bones.
ABSOLUTELY insane to me that people do not already know these tips for eating cooking and shopping. Most of it is just common sense.
I tend to freeze extra things like when I made soup, I had peeled two potatoes that would have been just to much in the soup, I blanched them and froze it. It came in handy next time. I pulled it out and put it in the pot. I do this with everything even if it’s one stalk of cut up celery. Our trash day is Friday, Thursday is leftover night. It works for everyone. Things like scraps and egg shells go into the compost for the garden. It all gives back
Reduce Food Waste:
• Meal Plan
• Have homemade meals in your freezer
• Grow your own herbs
• Freeze food about to go bad for soups and smoothies
• Analyze your problem areas
• Learn to prepare food in multiple ways
• Keep basic foods in your pantry
• Evaluate your perishables every 3 days
• Use bits of food in omelettes and casseroles
I have been dehydrating broccoli stems and other veggie scraps to be ground up for veggie powder
My freezers are full, yet I am concerned about the power grid. I have a solar/ wind generator, yet I remain concerned and no longer try to freeze anything. I have a commercial dehydrator and use it instead.
You should see the amount of food thrown out per day at a Hotel/Convention center. Not to mention the raw materials and just plain garbage that comes out of a tradeshow.
Excellent talk!!!
We have become a wasteful nation, worked in restaurants entire adult life, you not believe the amount of food customers waste, hardly no one takes home.Excuses, not going right home!, It's 20 degrees outside, I believe it will be ok, well, we don't eat leftovers,!! Are you kidding me?!! You ordered All this food to throw majority away!!!! Unfortunately, for most yes, those are the types that don't," stock", because they don't like clutter, I right know have chicken carcasses drying, for bone meal, have peeled and dehydrated two big bags of apples," peels," well, I had to feed the wildlife🐿🦌,, orange peel, some for orange extract, the rest orange zest, mushrooms and tomatoes in dehydrator next, ends of celery, placed in water, then once started growing, moved to pot, growing in window, in kitchen" morning sun", every new thing I learn, or do, is one more the Father has aloud, I am so grateful everyday to him, for without the father's guidance and blessing I am nothing, without he who made me, this is not about stocking food, it is about going back to the ways our father intended, learn those ways, and teach other's.oh, edited, almost forgot, I saw a clip from fox, laura ingram, I believe about food waste, I think it had to do with the illegals at 5 star hotel's, and the huge amount of food they are wasting.
I had a spaghetti squash fall on me I forgot about from the garden. All rotten. Usually lasts til March at least. What a mess.
That thumbnail picture of a monumental pile of perfectly good looking fresh food, got my anger juices going !!! 😱😠😡
* I think it is beyond outrageous that perfectly edible and still usable food gets destroyed, in place of going to the foodbanks.
* Let shoppers take some FREE items of their choice, after shopping. That would be another awesome way of giving back, and happy customers do return.
I cook the whole broccoli bunch then use the stems for soup. I blend them then add what I have on hand–chicken, leftover vegetables, etc. Adding cheese makes it especially wonderful.
How come u never mention a snicky snax anymore?
I was gifted some fresh oranges, I dehydrated some peels (for vitamin c powder), I sliced up some others and made candied oranges, you can eat the peels on these also. Nothing goes to waste in my home.❤️
Big corporate grocery stores are the biggest food wasters. If you watch these dumpster diving you tube videos you can see all the food waste. When a stores freezer goes out, instead of donating it to food banks they throw it in a huge dumpster. Big tax write off for these stores.
I DEHYDRATE CARROT GREENS TO EVERYTHING…WILTING LETTUCE & SPINACH CAN BE DEHYDRATED FOR GREEN POWDER FOR SMOOTHIES OR ADD TO SOUPS…BEET TOPS ARE AWESOME SAUTÉED IN BUTTER WITH GARLIC….ENJOY
I have 3 teens. Nothing gets wasted here. I look for Celery with lots of leaves. Very tasty and you can dry them and use for seasoning
I made sure to buy some Tupperware Fridge Smart containers for all of my fresh fruits and veggies. Makes my produce last a whole lot longer! There are a lot of websites out there where you can print out substitutions for things, like applesauce in place of oil in cakes. I plan on trying to buy up some eggs when I can find them at a decent price that I am willing to pay and then scramble them and put them in ice cube trays to freeze. Once frozen, put them in a freezer bag or container. Then when I need an egg or two in a recipe I can simply pull out what I need and thaw it out for use.
Anything we can’t/ don’t eat either goes to the chickens or in my compost.
If you only use part of an onion, place what you can use later, in an empty bag the bread came in. Use it up, until all is used. Reused plastic bags safe money. No need for all kinds of ziploc bags, which by the way can be washed in the sink, along with the dishes, and then dried. I use mine over and over. WASTE NOTHING AT ALL.
We hang our onions in mess bags you buy on Amazon and hang them from a ceiling hook. They last twice as long
