TIPS on Seed Starting Success, Planting Seedlings & STORING them for the Spring Outdoors or Indoors

Planting seedlings and storing for the Spring can be done in many ways. Here I store them outdoors, so they are ready to go straight into the totes, buckets, containers or garden.

  1. hi robbie πŸ€—
    another great video.
i have, what i think are, aphids all over my broccoli heads. ive received a few recommendations, but what do you think is the best way to get rid of the aphids and save my broccoli?
this is my first time ever having aphids in my garden on anything. i wonder if it's because of all the rain. tfs

  2. Robbie, you have such an inspiring voice. You make me want to go plant something. lol It's not time here in North Carolina to even start seeds, though, so I enjoy watching you do yours. Blessings to you.

  3. Hi Robbie, great video, thank you! I would love to know how to build a mini greenhouse! 🌱

  4. Hi Robbie, I wanted to let you know I "harvested" my first vegs from the garden last night!! The salad greens were delicious! I have some squash that will be ready next week I hope…thanks again for all you do and all the great info! I'm now officially addicted to container gardening! BTW…I'm the one that lives in AZ.

  5. Hi Robbie, great timing. I’m chomping at the bit to start planting seeds and you showed me some good tips. I received the vegetable seeds from Baker Creek and am excited to get started. It’s going to be 28 degrees tonight so the seedlings will stay inside. Stay warm!πŸŒ·βœ¨πŸ’™πŸ¦‹πŸ“πŸ˜¬

  6. I start seeds in those black take out containers with the clear lids. I usually use them after they don't look so good for keeping leftovers, so that they still have some life before they get thrown out or recycled.

  7. Miss Kitty is probably whispering in your ear at night to grow tons of broccoli this year.πŸ˜ƒ
Nice video Robbie.πŸ‘ I can always find folks who want my extra seedlings.πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸŒΎ
By the way you can plant brassicas deep…up to the first leaves. This helps if they get leggy. Also brassicas like a firm soil when you transplant them. It makes for a stronger plant that won't flop over.
Went out and got my pots some clothes today. I'm going to have fun dressing them up…especially the buckets from Lowe's. Thanks!πŸ’•

  8. So far our winter was mild! But we are not near seed starting. My volunteer lettuce seedlings got put in little pots, but most didn't survive. Since I had a few rooted other plants the pots got repurposed, was just right. The few lettuce that made it look quite healthy. Now I have the little black gnat warπŸ˜‚ fly papers do a great job though.

  9. Indeed, nature can take a toll on seedlings….great wisdom. It is an awesome time of the year to start seeds and gardens very soon. I love both wild birds and garden cats, but sadly the two don't mix well. I place Hummingbird feeders high….but Hummingbirds like to surf low to the flowers and I know some of my Hummingbirds are casualties.

  10. I agree tomatoes and peppers like to grow with friends. We harvested some beautiful broccoli πŸ₯¦ today. Definitely need hints and tips on small greenhouse tote.

  11. Hi dear. I have ordered most of the plants you share. I have my kitchen counter full of baby plants. I just received purple tumeric. πŸ’œ I need to make your winter tote. You have literally been all I am watching here in az. We are getting down to 28 here in Southern Arizona. I have covered, wrapped, brought in my garage, and in my living room πŸ˜†πŸ˜Š. I love ❀️ 😍 gardening and you have helped me so much. Please keep Sharing. πŸ™ you have been such a blessing. God bless all.

  12. ROBBIE, OH MY GOODNESS I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT ALL THE CRITTERS AFTER OUR PLANTS. AWESOME VIDEO. I SHOWED MY HUSBAND. WOW SO HELPFUL. THANK YOU ROBBIE. LOVE YOU ❀

  13. I have a problem with starting too many seedlings. Lol! I do keep extra, because like you said, things happen, plus, this way, I can give some to neighbors. I worked outside today, getting my totes ready, and chopping up cannas for mulch. I set out some lettuces and broccoli last week, and I have a few kale seedlings that made it through our coldest weather during Christmas. I live in Florida, and that's the coldest weather we've had here since 1983! I planted some tomato seeds, and some pollinator plants yesterday, and have those under a lamp, with a plant light, and saran wrap over them. They do really good like this for me.
I enjoy, as well as learn so many things from your videos! Kitty is ALWAYS a bonus as well!πŸ₯°

  14. I moved back to this area about 2 years ago. I ran into a lady I worked with years ago. She actually lives about 2 blocks from me. She invited me to have a seed starting day in February. She has a list of what plants to start and when. Considering I have lived in numerous states from Alaska to Arizona and many others. It has been difficult to keep up with planting zones. I am excited to learn those skills since this is my permanent location. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

  15. Thanks for all your user-friendly videos. I really appreciate the fact your ideas are budget friendly and involve repurposing!

  16. I can't imagine growing more zucchini than I can eat. Last year I killed an entire pack of seeds in my first ever attempt at growing it. ugh. I am hoping to try again this year. . .

  17. Another inspiring video for the gardening community !!!! I really "like" the water cooler paper cup concept ; because I'm not too good at transplanting seedlings !!!! Thanks , Robbie and Gary !!!!

  18. Never buy seed starting mix, to expensive, I make my own, costly in the beginning but I'll have it for years.

  19. I need to make some greenhouse totes. Thank you for another awesome video full of helpful tips!

  20. Getting totes ready. Won’t be planting outside anytime soon. Starting inside in sunroom flowers for side yard. Like your tote cold frame idea.

  21. Last year was a bust with Covid-19 and husband being very sick 3 hospital stays. Want to grow a ton-of food. 😊

  22. I learned my lesson to do at least two plants of a kind. Some need two to grow and pollinate while some just like to be crowded together. It is like one dog is fine but two dogs are happier esp when they grow up together!

  23. Thank you so much Robbie 🌟 I've planted my broccolis and all my brassicas early in the season and know they're almost ready! at first all my plants were filled with cabbage caterpillars! Brassicas attract these caterpillars….and they were eating my plants. I did everything to make them go away until an agronomist told me to put Thuringia bacillus! I looked for this and saw that it is ok and in fact this is how I saved all my plants! they were not only eating my vegetables, but they had laid eggs everywhere, on all my plants.
I also got earthworms! they had some plants that I bought and put in the totes where I have my lettuces and feeding them!!! I am very very happy!!! I can't throw away any seedlings too! I plant them and if they make it that is ok! The paper caps they are plastic indeed but I also like to use them like you've shown us!!!
Can you believe that I still have cherry tomatoes?!!! I cut them and rip them off inside!!! So crazy weather here…
Please take care Robbie ❣️ Be safe you and Gary ✨🌻
Thank you so much for your helpful videos πŸ‘πŸ’—πŸŒŸ

  24. If you see what transplants cost these days at the big box stores, the nice thing to do is grow extra starter plants to give away to people. Some are growing food to help make ends meet and to have a healthier alternative to the pesticide grown, colored cellulose at the supermarket.
Can find people who want starter plants through local gardening groups on Facebook, Nextdoor, and local community gardens.
Starting seeds closer together in recycled food containers and then up-pottting them has been helpful in small grow light set up and small outside growing area.

  25. Robbie, I have lots of hummers. More then I ever imagined. I have 7 feeders. I make sure they have food in them. I have one bird that has laid claim to all feeders. He lives in my yard and attacks any hummingbird that enters the territory. Is this okay?

  26. Hi there. You are so informative. I planted tomato seeds that I saved. This was the first time so I wanted to see if they would grow. I'm hoping so. That was a huge delicious tomato that I bought at the farmers market. Take care.
