Garden Plans

Vivi's Kitchen Garden: Back to the Land (with a plan!)

Finally I get back to the land! It’s time to asses the work that needs to be done and see if my plan on paper will work on the ground. It’s going to be a very different garden this year with different ways of sowing my seeds and this will affect timings…..so I need to get my head around it all!

  1. Darlin so sorry of your loss because of this weather, watched the boys on Sunday chat and I just couldn't believe over 300 GBP to stay warm for a month but still shivering. This madness is all attentional. You have an excellent plan Vivi, and I am so happy that you will continue until the move. The daffodils are popping up everywhere around here in Tennessee, but I think it's a fool's spring. So, I'm going to wait until after April 15th to start.

  2. Ahhhhh, your garden with green! A bit of envy from the Canadian prairie. BUT the sun is so very much stronger already even if we have a few more months of snow. I hope you can go slowly and enjoy your garden, the plan seems very logical. I think your garlic may surprise you. We plant ours in the late fall (it doesn't even break ground) and somehow it survives the frozen ground and comes in the spring? It may be doing something like that for you. 🤞 And on a final note, aren't both cat spray and rotten potatoes on the most vile smells list? 🤢

  3. The cost of food in the United States has been steadly inflating; although, that is not my problem yet. Providing enough food was difficult during the years my family was growing up, but, now it's only me I need to feed. The cost of electricity in South East Texas is sky rocketing and because I live in an all electric house it has become my problem. The cause of higher prices is mainly due to political efforts to switch to clean energy which is becoming a hugh issue and "tug of war" between the main two political parties here in the USA. I could continue telling you about the mess it is causing us in our 'neck of the woods'; however, I will save that story for my diary and/or my prayers.

  4. Dear Vivi, it's amazing how a little bit of sunshine can lift the spirit and bring back some optimism xxx

  5. If you have some extra seeds, perhaps you could sow a tiny row of lettuce or carrots direct in one of the now empty beds, mainly for fresh eating. They grow really fast and will come out before you put in the main stuff. Also right now the ground is fairly wet, so you wouldn't have to water. It would be kind of a winter sowing experiment.

  6. Good plan for the garden Vivi. Such a treat to see grass and shoots greening up. The snow is finally melting, the days are getting longer and more sunny days than not. Thanks for the tour. ❤️🌟

  7. Boy I bet the plants that did survive will have superior seeds. The old lovage stalks would nice homes for bees this year if you leave them. New stalks will hide them anyway.

  8. Wonderful plan, Vivi! Wish you all the best with weather and implementation. We’re having a few days above freezing and then it drops below freezing. Something we’ve never seen is ice potholes! 4-6 inches thick ice with some breaks. And, we can see the tops of the raised beds and my big pots. Yay! 👍😁

  9. Garden looks neat, I like your plan except I'd still sow a few capsicum, yum. I'm surprised there are no secatuers in your hand! It's Wet season here in nth Qld, no gardening, too hot and humid till end March/Apr. Then we will be away for 6 mths where I hope to grow a few things in pots, like baby spinach, rocket, cherry tomatoes. Cheers.

  10. That's a smart plan. I'm looking forward to it. You are lucky your weed seed bank is low. I have an uncovered bed and now it's just lawn lol. I have to dig it all over again. I won't get a tiller but it will be quite the job.

  11. Give the garlic some compost! Anything you have? It’s early yet. I am so sorry you lost so much to the frost. That is a bummer bigtime but it’s time to start over. You need a helper and I know you didn’t have it so you did your best. Plus you were sick for a lot of last year. One step at a time. Your respiratory health is the utmost priority and keeping inflammation down. Aging just sucks but moving and knee issues and aging and gardening is a lot. You can do some of the basics and then need to focus on your move and optimizing your living circumstances. I know the food is part of that tho so I understand.

  12. 🙋hi from Scotland Vivi there is nothing wrong with your plot it looks ok for this time of the year we have had _11 lots of time and still have a lot on the plot ,you say you will only have one broadbean plant I have not sown my he yet they can be started March through till April and your lucky because your weather is a lot warmer than Scotland so you have plenty time to start every thing take care Anne from Scotland

  13. That was lovely Vivi. You are way too hard on yourself, I have my own health issues but not with your complications related to your knees. I think your plot looks in great shape – but I know it isn't up to your own exacting standards. I managed to transplant my garlic today – poor things have been growing in pots since October! I think your new plan is brilliant – will give you lots of what you want but without a lot of the extra work. I generally sow into modules and transplant. Have fun.

  14. Would it be possible to have a raised bed . Feel a lot of gardeners have a disability what a great future proofing for community gardens.Feel the garden will soon look great still early.

  15. You have a plan and despite things being different for you this year you always approach the new challenge with optimism.
Thank you for the garden update Vivi .❤
