Garden Fails, Starting Over, & Other Garden Tips

Sometimes garden veggies can be saved. Other times it’s best to rip it out and start all over.

Come spend a Saturday afternoon in our garden. I’ll also give you some tips on keeping cats out of your garden beds, dealing with aphids, and how to keep the birds from pecking your tomatoes 😉

Reaganite71 is now Tiki71 to reflect our love of tropical gardening, palm trees, and all things TIKI! I’m the same guy, just older, with a beard, and now I’m growing out instead of up thanks to Katiie’s cooking.

👎🏼 I DO NOT buy, nor recommend plant SEEDS on Amazon, only live plant from sellers well rated. I’ve had too many bogus experiences.

👍🏼 I absolutely DO recommend Amazon on live plants that you can’t get locally. Several of our multi-year tropicals have come from good suppliers on Amazon (like (Logee’s, American Plant Exchange, Cold Hardy Farms, Costa Farms, Old Oaks Nursery, Hirts, etc.) and arrived alive and well.

  1. Wow your tomatoes are a little ahead of mine!! You got one great looking garden there I can't stand all the dern buggy bugs in the garden seems there is a bug or critter for everything that grows.I love the christmas balls. You know what them birds are telling around your neighbor hood hey guys stay away from this man's garden his tomatoes are hard as plastic and aint got a bit of flavor lol !!!

  2. Hard for us in a long drought, to hear you complain about the rain, LOL!  Your garden looks great, nice work.

  3. Hey reaganite. My pickling cucs look the same but don't have aphids. They have the droopies. I water everyday and cover them in the heat of the sun with umbrellas. Why are they looking so droopy? Thanks!

  4. I think it is going to be another summer like last year here, it rained all year! It was great for our cucumbers, not so great for the tomatoes. Blight hit all the farm's tomatoes and my garden too! The farmer around the corner from me lost $140,000 due to the blight. Yikes! I am spraying organic fungicide for prevention this year.  Hope it works. 🙂  Are you growing hybrids? Many have resistance to disease.

  5. Hi – Re – your Drunken Compost – Each day I have about 1 – 1/2 cup of coffee to dump down the sink – I was thinking if Coffee grounds are good for the garden – why can't i use coffee in my compost mix? – It's Nitrogen Right? – so i don't have a 20 gal sprayer – so I figure maybe 2 oz of beer and cola and alittle less ammonia in a 2 gal watering can with my left over coffee should give it a little boost. My neighbours gave me some Natural mulch, So if I use that with grass clippings and Drunk Coffee? what do you think?

  6. Completely understand the starting over route. I have only been getting more serious with gardening within the last couple years but I have done it plenty of times. I am thinking I would have let the snake live unless it was messing with my blue birds or purple martins, the kids should know better

  7. We've gotten alot of rain as well and my little garden is being hit with powdery mildew real bad! Thanks for the red christmas ball tip – I recently caught a couple of cardinals hopping my tomato cages looking for treats!

  8. I have been learning & watching your unique video tips on tomatoes. I had begun tapping the tomatoes as you showed, what do you do that on a daily basis, a weekly basis, or the monthly basis? What is your recommendation?

  9. I love the christmas bulb and coffee can idea.  I had the idea of coat hangers but my husband hasn't put up the video yet.  Bet of luck with the rain.

  10. How old is that compost? It must be a couple of years old. Don't lie! I watched drunken compost a long time ago and know!  🙂 I like the new bed/technique/coat hanger tip.
I got a great start on aphids this year going to maybe try your technique. Soap by itself doesn't seem to be helping here.

  11. True, sometimes you just need to start over. We bought a couple of grapevines on a lark, took a couple of years to get them established then we got a good harvest – BUT, I found out they were too seedy to make good eating, and didn't make very good jam either. Could have left them so the birds could have a bounty, but instead took them completely out last autumn and started fresh again this year with seedless varieties. Live and learn.

  12. I saw your videos on those giant tomatoes.Wow they are really big. We have the same problem with the rain but I think that I arranged my plants according to how much water they can take. For instance my garlic are container is toward the wall, There they get less water. Loved and Subbed. Great job It's growing

  13. Another remedy for keeping cats out is to grind up orange peels and mix them with moth balls (crushed)

  14. Speaking of starting over.. the bed you had with all the grass in it, I had one identical. I took 45 minutes weeding and found 5 dime sized watermelons on the vines!!
My question is, at the end of the year is there a way to kill all the grass with a liquid and Still be safe to plant the next season? I have one bed that is too short (height) and will be building on top of it to make it taller.
I think next season I will amend all the soil then cover in black plastic to keep the grass down but then the question is how do you get water through the black plastic? Lol.
