Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. In the Middle East we use the small ones only , just cut a little of the top of each one frying them a little bit first , then we add it to the fresh prepared tomato juice or sauce with pieces of cooked lamb with a quantity of garlic, then leave it on a low heat for half an hour or less so that the okra absorbs the tomato sauce and adjust the amount of salt and lemon juice as desired , some people add a little coriander leaves and onions too, usually served with rice or bread or as you like 😋😋😋

  2. I always stayed away cuz of all the chatter about the “slime”…..it’s wonderful! N the slime talk is waaay overrated. Sautéed some w cabbage ,carrots n onion… YUM! Thx brother Mark🌸

  3. Love okra. Simmer tiny pods and dip them like finger food in butter spiced with fresh lime juice. It's delicious!

  4. I do like okra when I'm cooking vegetable stew..👍 yummy 😋 but in UK it's kind of expensive… you can buy a kg of okra or a kg of chicken 🐔 at the same price… maybe okra it's more expensive than chicken

  5. Okra is one of the best foods for building your blood!!
    Better than transfusion.
Also to cut the slim put a little tomato in the pot when cooking.

  6. I'm new to okra. One of our plants has a flower on it. Was I suppose to pick and eat the pod that turned into the flower or does the flower turn into the pod that is edible?

  7. I get the feeling russel crow has been jumping the fence and pinching his neighbours horse poo 💩

  8. Hey I found a lot of videos about how to grow okra but I can’t find how many okra I should expect to harvest off each plant per week/month/season. Could you give me an indication?

  9. I grow it too. Thanks for your tips! ❤

For those who do not know it, okra fights diabetes, regardless of how you cook it. It regulates blood sugar.

  10. Very inspirational;I have planted only 6 plants but they have been producing enough fruits for my small family.

  11. I live in the southern US, and okra 'n tomatoes is a big thing here as a side dish, as is fried okra. We slice it and batter it with cornmeal and deep fry it. And my boyfriend also likes adding cooked okra to macaroni and cheese, of all things, along with chopped fresh tomatoes and crumbled bacon. It's divine! I love it in soups too. The slime doesn't bother me lol. LOOOOVE okra!!! Hoping to grow some for the first time this year. ❤😋

  12. The best way to grow okra is to plant seeds and leave them alone!!!! Bad soil is better than good!!!!

  13. i grow the Clemson Spineless .
didn't know there were others . going to try the red burgundy and another called the Jambalaya .
mine got 10 ft tall last season and produced well into October . i already have seedlings up 1.5" tall .
beans are doing nicely as well . royal burgundy bush beans . none of my squash or tomato's are coming up yet but fingers are crossed .

  14. I grew Okra last year for the first time and I will say that I loved it. It yielded so much in one growing season for me. I didn't know all of the health benefits until I grew it. I can can definitely say for sure I saw improvements in my health.

Lots of nutritional goodness for the body.
    Like ur show

I plan them every year in pots

  16. Mama was a DelMarVa gal, so she brought her okra passion to SoCal and I grew up with it in the menu. Still hard to find in the grocers, so I have to search far and wide. Want it fresh and loose, not in plastic, which makes things even harder. Loved that fake Aussie accent at the end. Wonder what you lot find a Los Angeles accent to be.

  17. I didn't check if anyone has contributed with this info, but in the Caribbean sliced okra is added to the rice when cooking it. In the West Indies it's a necessary ingredient to prepare callaloo.

It's true, for some family members we have to go easy on the proportions so they won't complain about the slime.
