While many modern gardens celebrate muted pastels, monotones and the beauty of green on green, Jane wants us to move away from these safe, soft colour palettes and embrace the brighter side of life with some outrageous colour! Whatever your garden style or situation, there are some great flowers or combinations to get you walking on the wild side of colour.

Featured plants
• Rose ‘La Sevillana’  (Rosa cv.) is available as a shrub or standard. Try underplanting with groundcover roses in contrasting colours.
• Hibiscus ‘Sunshine Yellow’ (Hibiscus rosa sinensis cv.) will grow as far south as Melbourne.
• Mandevilla (Mandevilla cv.) is a climber available in a range of bright colours and can tolerate frosts down to -6°C, but be sure to wear gloves when pruning to protect your skin from the milky sap.
• Bougainvillea ‘Scarlett O’Hara’ (Bougainvillea cv.) love tropical heat but will grow further south in a hot spot against a brick wall.

Colourful Australian Natives
Try Grevillea ‘Katherine’s Sister’ (Grevillea cv.) with spectacular red flowers and elegant foliage. Christmas Bells (Blandfordia nobilis) produces spikes of red and yellow flowers in summer; perfect for a rockery or container. For a groundcover, Cut-Leaf Daisy (Brachyscome multifida cv.) comes in a range of colours, from pinks to violet purples; for something special pick a Mulla Mulla (Ptilotus cv.), which produces fluffy flower heads of silver and purple-pink.

Colourful Plants for Shade
Coral Bells (Heuchera cv.) are low shrubs with colourful foliage in a range of colours from lime green to maroon and metallic purple.

Colourful Edibles
Eye-popping edibles include Coneflower (Echinacea cv.) with showy flowers in purple, burnt reds, hot oranges, gaudy pinks and look-at-me yellows.

  1. I'm being bold I think. Bought my family a Red Decca Banana plant. Yummy red bananas instead of yellow.

  4. Totally agree! Sick of these bland modern gardens. The brighter, the better in my cottage garden 🤗

  5. I'm new to any kind of gardening. I know how to weed but that's it.
Any advise was great. I have so many flowers to plant but I'm scared I will destroy them.
I will continue to watch you and I'm willing to learn.
