Inside A Fully Renovated 19th-Century Farmhouse | Design Notes

Interior designers James Thurstan Waterworth and Scarlett Supple welcome us into their renovated farmhouse, nestled in the Duke of Somerset’s estate in Wiltshire. Together they have filled the house with elegant, earthy colours and beautiful, distinctive antiques. “Working together was interesting,” explains Scarlett. “We wanted it to be quite a clean space that we could layer with antiques and textiles and all of James’ beautiful pieces in his collection.”

Watch the full episode of Design Notes and tour James Thurstan Waterworth & Scarlett Supple’s fully restored homestead, as the pair explain how they maintained original features whilst adding a modern finish complete with warm decor and layered textiles.

  1. “When we have friends over we play peek-a-boo around the giant light fixture over the kitchen island”- catty but true?

  2. Too stark and dark. I'm having a panic attack just looking at it.

  3. It's a beautiful period farmhouse and there are some amazing pieces of furniture, but they've gone a bit too 'ethnic eclectic' which makes it look a little like a 1970s squat, and I couldn't live with stone floors no matter how original ~ they entirely suck the heat out of a room. I would go for wide, antique finish engineered oak ultra-insulated below. Their combined style needs more resolution to make it work as a cohesive whole. Also, what's with the raised modernist-style fireplace in a grand old period building…just doesn't work.

  4. I love the house and the antiques, they did a great job but why remove all the fireplace surrounds, removing original features in my opinion is quite sad.

  5. I love this farmhouse meets modern cabin loveliness the wood pieces are amazing and the kitchen I love the black appliances I read in AD magazine people are going back to white or black appliances for 2023 not so much stainless steel 😊 cool🤎

  6. everything would be fine, and the house in the village is wonderful, but why do you walk in street shoes in the house? It's not comfortable, is it really strange, impossible to walk in house shoes? I just conclude that this house is not clean since the owners go home in sports shoes

  7. I would love to know the colour paint on the kitchen cabinets, really beautiful shade of blue/green 😍

  8. Wonderful!! Loved when the little one wandered in front of the camera, so precious!

  9. Beautiful, but I would take off all those window treatments! They are making an already somewhat dark and diminutive space look more-so. Get some extra light bouncing around with large mirrors and extra lighting! Open the ceiling to the rafters in at least one or two and/or add skylights if at all possible. Best of luck!

  10. How offensive and pretentious…it was a family home when it was a farm, you muppets.

  11. Elevated fireplaces❤?! I’m in love! There’s a clarity, texture & warmth to this home that really appeals to me. Would love to stay there & just experience it for a week…especially in the winter months! Kudos to these lovely homeowners👏🙂!

  12. What a beautiful, warm couple and home! There's always going to be someone in the comments offering their two cents on what someone else's home should look like. But this couple has clearly put thought, love, and teamwork into adapting this lovely historic home and it shows! A perfect example of a home that might not necessarily be my personal style, but that I feel very inspired by. Thank you for sharing!

  13. Initially looks like a standard cottage interior but after a closer look you can see how well curated everything is and love the subtle modern features

  14. This home is delightful and very personal to this lovely couple.

It is designed to what They like and it is their family home. I love that they’ve incorporated so many things they have bought together in their travels into this farm house and not hidden them away.

Loved everything about this home. The little girl was just adorable which was an added bonus.

  15. Beautiful example of working with neutrals but loads of interesting natural materials with warmth and texture. There's no lack of color here irl, although on camera magentas and cyans give the best pop; they have rugs, pottery and folkart scattered everywhere and the more neutral scheme showcases these and all the aged woods perfectly.
I'd feel very relaxed in this house, and not be mindboggled by the amount of constant dusting many other featured homes must involve 😉
Really lovely pieces that all seem like they've been there forever. And I like the slightly modern feel contrasting the antiques. Nothing mumsy about this house!

  16. Bravo! Such a calm and serene space. This is the kind of environment where I get inspired to create. ❤

  17. Amazing that House and Garden have featured such a beautiful habitat, and a brilliantly normal couple, with their child. Excellent.

  18. Oh this one is special! I adore all the special curated items and they both have such a great eye for beauty. Also love the warmth of the fireplaces in all the rooms.

  19. beautiful young couple with a tasteful home but so cold. the hard floors are so unforgiving. and choosing blue for the winter lounge will add to that. i can understand why, even with work commitments, they don't go there much.

  20. I always see the most amazing and nice things in thse videos that dont seem to exist in the real world like the blanket on the sofa.

  21. Such a sad, low energy space. I have loved almost every home featured on this channel but this one is a no for me.

  22. A stunning property. The natural wood furniture & exposed brickwork is beautiful. Very tastefully done. A great house to have kids in with the robust floors.

  23. I know it’s wrong to choose favourites when there are so many gorgeous items, but that kitchen island is spectacular! But really an amazingly done house throughout.
