I’m cutting down my neighbors’ trees

I know that sounds terrible but I promise there are a lot of reasons why we think this is going to be better all around in the end. Hang with me a little as I explain why we’re doing what we’re doing.

My name is Erin and I love sharing inspiration and information with real-life gardeners. I live and garden in southeastern Wisconsin, zone 5b.

  1. I know some people won't agree with this plan and I respect that opinion. All I ask is that you watch the video to find out the WHY before you comment.

  2. Wowza, this is quite the undertaking! I will be watching, change is good . Happy Gardening 👩‍🌾

  3. I think your plan to replace trees that have outgrown their original purpose is going to be far more effective and attractive overall. Better for humans and wildlife both than the trees there now.

  4. Can you share the link to Yulia's YouTube channel? I am redesigning out back yard this year. Thanks!

  5. Erin, this whole project is a win-win-win for you, the neighbors and the environment! So nice to hear of collaboration rather than animosity these days. You and Yuliya are my 2 favorite gardeners to follow, so I will surely love watching this transformation. Onward!

  6. Can you come to my house? I have a row of 6 old large photinia (formerly shrubs, now 30 ft tall) that were killed during our December sudden destructive hard freeze here in the Southeast. I would love to have them cut down but my neighbor whose property they are on doesn't care.

  7. We cut down a ton of “scrub” trees that were behind our house. What an HUGE difference it made. Working on cleaning up the aftermath and landscape the whole thing. Such a huge difference to our yard. Best decision ever! We can now see about 3 miles in open fields. Sometimes things just are not what brings you joy and you need to do what you need to do bring you joy!

  8. I’m glad I don’t have to worry about deer. Your plan is very exciting, I hope all goes well. You are super fortunate to have similar minded neighbors.

  9. Love these plans! I think it will be more beneficial for wildlife and be more functional & beautiful. Completely unrelated, your eyebrows look fantastic!

  10. Are there any concerns that construction vehicles or machines might take out any of your new plantings? I’ve been absolutely dismayed at what has been run over during construction projects. I lost hydrangea, rhododendrons and cut flowers in my front yard when I had a shed built in the back garden…my guess is that an employee that didn’t have experience backing a trailer was tasked with that job. This is just a hypothesis because I can’t come up with another scenario that would result in this damage across the front beds.🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

  11. This is such a pretty plan. I have an overgrown row of pine trees that look a lot like that. I already limbed them up to live growth, and am considering a native rhodedendron underneath to add back privacy. Do you think this is a workable idea? Any suggestions?

  12. What an ambitious project – how fortunate you are that everyone involved agrees on what needs to be done. The results will be beautiful and functional for you and your neighbors. Looking forward to seeing videos of how it all comes together. Thank you for taking us along.

  13. Erin, This plan is gorgeous! Don’t listen to the naysayers…you’re making your yard work for you and there will be much more diversity and support for wildlife once your plan is executed. P.S. I love Yulia’s Y Garden channel too!

  14. Sounds exciting. May I ask is the cost for this project a shared cost between you and your neighbor? I've had trees removed and I know what that costs. Thank you for including us in this project.

  15. Somehow I never realized your property was right on a huge lake. I was really surprised when I saw that aerial view of your neighbor’s property and saw waves crashing on a beach.

  16. Your planting project will be gorgeous, BUT I am so sorry about your neighbor's building plans! We had next door neighbors, with a pool, that constantly partied and we finally had to move :o( The loud music and EVERYTHING ELSE that went with it, made it impossible to enjoy our deck or yard all summer. We had a thickly planted screen, but it didn't stop the constant loud noise. You might want to do a little "house hunting", just in case you have to move too ~

  17. Completely for it before u said a word they don't serve there purpose anymore, and there too big.

  18. I think that will be awesome. I moved here in 2020 and it was mostly a blank slate. I am trying to make a bird friendly garden. I will be watching your changes. 😊

  19. As a REALTOR, trees can be one of my biggest nemeses. Landscapers/owners plant them too close to houses or driveways/walkways. They cause a lot of damage, they get diseases, struck by lightening (we had one in the neighbors yard get struck and had 6' shards embedded into the ground). Lend access to roofs for critters. They block sun (killing grass and other plants). Become diseased causing huge to the Sellers/Buyers. I personally had to have a total of 16 tree removed from my personal properties last year costing 500-1100 per tree.. you do the math. Last week my neighbors lost a tree that ended up partially in our yard. And yesterday with the very strong winds we had several behind us fell. Thankfully, they are in the woods so we can leave them where they fell. I have 2 more hardwoods with Black rot that I will have to deal with this year, ugh. My advice to anyone reading this is to be careful and pay attention to where you plant and the eventual height of the tree and NEVER ever plant them near driveways, walkways or your home and remember it will cost 500-2000 depending upon size to have that tree removed. Plan and plant wisely. ;0)

  20. Congratulations on working this out with your neighbor. I’m sure it wasn’t easy. But it looks like it will be a lovely improvement.

  21. Exciting! (Yay for Yuliya!) Will you be chipping the wood or trying to use the big logs somehow?

I’ve been wanting to add several hemlocks, as they fit my site needs too, but I’m so afraid of the wooly adelgid 😢 PA is overrun.

  22. Thank goodness for a neighbor that is willing to work with you. The end results will look much better. I would be nervous on the extra parking, privacy and noise parts but that’s the price of having neighbors. Good luck I look forward to seeing it come together.

  23. Loved the ending music and the sky view of the water and peninsula! You have been hinting at a big project in your last several videos and I've been looking forward to finding out what the project is- and no dissapointment! This is exciting, I hope you will share all the steps with us. Your goals are something we can all relate to as gardeners and homeowners and environmentalists. I'm also in zone 5B but in a higher elevation and drier area (Colorado) so I will be taking notes and considering which plants might work in my area. I'm most interested in finding out how you prep the soil after removing the stumps.

  24. Despite the economic downturn I'm so happy. I have been earning $60,000 return from my $7,000 investment every 13days.😊
