— ABOUT ZHAGANA
Zhagana is a natural stone-made city, an ancient city located in Yiwa Township, 30 kilometers northwest of Diebu (Tewo) County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, meaning “Rock Box” in Tibetan. The terrain resembles a large-scale giant palace and a natural rock wall.
– The mountains of Zhagana are steep and shrouded in clouds and mist, like a fairyland. The reasonable collocation and complementary integration of various production activities such as nomadic herding, farming, hunting and woodcutting in Tibetan villages have become a model of harmonious coexistence between mankind and nature.
– Zhagana has two concepts in terms of administration and management:
– one is “Zhagana Village”, which consists of four villager groups (Dongwa, Yeri, Dari and Daiba) from near to far, are all natural villages;
– The second is “Zhagana Scenic Area”, which is roughly the “Fairy Beach” and “Fairy Lake” for ordinary tourists to visit.
– “Zhagana Village” is a very ordinary village, without too much characteristics and strong cultural history. It is not like the ethnic minority villages in the Yunnan-Guizhou area, where most of the traces of traditional handicrafts are left; it is not like the Daxinganling area, where the iron hoofs of the Russian and Japanese invaders and the laughter of the educated youth when they go to the countryside are echoed everywhere.
– This place used to be a closed place. Apart from the surrounding cliffs and peaks, perhaps the only history that can be talked about is the “Rock’s House” in Yeri Village. It is actually the place where Locke (Joseph Rock or Joseph Locke) once lived after crossing Die Mountain from Jonê County to the south and entering Zhagana.
— JOSEPH ROCK
Joseph Rock, the American explorer and biologist, arrived at Zhagana in 1925. Shocked by the spectacular views here, he wrote in his diary, “The valley here is made up of rows upon rows of gorges that are numbered in thousands. These horizontal gorges gestate vast expanses of forest unknown to any people. Like the Garden of Eden, I have never seen so magnificent a landscape. If authors of the Genesis had seen the beautiful scenery in Diebu, they would have put the place of origin of Adam and Eve here. I was shocked by this place of Diebu, the vast forest is a phytological museum; absolutely, it is a land of virginity. It would be the holy place of people who love nature and all the tourists”.
– Although this paradise was hailed by Rock as the birthplace of Adam and Eve nearly a hundred years ago, it is still a virgin land.
— ROCK’S ROAD
The “Rock’s Road” winding upwards from the direction of Zhagana is also called “Jiangdie Highway” (X412, From Jiangke River in Jonê County in the north to Dianga Town in Tewo County in the south), also known as “Zhuodian Highway”, “G248 National Road” and “Taodie Ancient Road”. In fact, Locke didn’t walk this road to Jonê, it’s just a general term for Self-driving enthusiasts. Regarding the “Tao Die Ancient Road”, it refers to the pastoral road connecting Jonê (Zhuoni) County and Diebu (Tewo) County instead of the driving route. Because Zhagana lacks of pastures, some local herdsmen rented pastures with Jonê (Zhuoni) in the past, and they need to rush Cattle and horses to Zhuoni to graze along the “Taodie Ancient Road”. Therefore, Locke went north through the Guanggai Mountain from the path behind Dongwa Village, and took the east and west lines of the “Taodie Ancient Road”; the “Jiangdie Highway” was built after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, but it also connected Diebu (Tewo) and Jonê (Zhuoni) before. The passage of chebagou valley, so theoretically it can be said to be one of the “Taodie Ancient Roads”. There are quite a few people who have traveled on this road, even now it is considered a very niche destination for tourists. The most beautiful and invincible sceneries along the road is concentrated in the section from Nangheika (also called Naheika) in Guanggai Mountain to the section where it meets with “Chebagou Valley”.
