Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We also grow lots of fruit and berries. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!

Weโ€™d be so grateful if you would like and share our videos if you find them useful. It helps us immensely.

  1. I love all of your fruit and citrus trees. I don't have room to plant trees, but I do have two figs from a friend. Hope to get my favorite fruit.

  2. Do you live in Houston? Do ever have local viewers visit your garden to help out? Share in the bounty?

  3. Congratulations on 200k!! You are a great teacher for this backyard gardener! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒฟ ๐ŸŽ‰

  4. Congratulations Scott! Steady and sure ๐Ÿ˜Š
I really appreciate your work and look forward to your videos !

  5. Congrats- love your channel and your way about gardening. Phoebe is awesome too. Keep up the good work !

  6. Congratulations ๐ŸŽ‰ I've learned so much about gardening from you. Thank you. โค

  7. Congratulations Scott! This is only my third year of (balcony) gardening but it has become such a passion of mine – thanks a lot to people like you! Thanks so much for all you have taught us

  8. Congratulations on 200K. I found you for your muscadine videos and liked your clear explanations of what to do with them. Now I'm watching your older videos. Thank you!

  9. Congrats Scott! Hope your channel has continued growth. I just got some paw paw trees. Saw on another channel where the owner covered his with shade cloth for the first year because they are an undergrowth tree. I think it was the millennial gardener. They may be like dogwoods which are difficult to move from the wild into your yard. Blessings!

  10. Congrats on your 200K subs! I enjoy your channel. btw, how's your single seed challenge going? I haven't started mine yet but have found my seed for the challenge. I just hope I don't jinx it and kill it on the first go. Again, congrats on the subs. Cheers, from us Downunder, ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Good morning Scott and a great big congratulations to your mile stone that was reached!!
I do have a quick question do you plant shelling peas in the spring or is that for our area a fall crop?

  12. Last year I planted my first garden and planted too late. Then the Texas heat came and I got zero tomatoโ€™s. During that time I found your channel. Watching your same struggle and listening to you reason through it was so comforting, I no longer felt like I was going crazy! Gardening can be super stressful, but your videos are so calming and grounded, they bring me back to reality. Iโ€™m so happy for you Mr. Scott! You deserve all of this. Thank you!!!

  13. Use Beneficial nematodes. I sprayed mine the other night. And yes I too have found them in my garden area. If all fails I will spray BT

  14. Love the tour. Learned a hard lesson today, beets and onions do NOT survive frost even though from my research they are supposed to. Went to the garden and all of them are dead, am almost in tears. We have such a short growing season but need to wait until at least second week of May to do any planting.

  15. I remember being one of your early subscribers and telling you that it was a treat seeing someone calm in a video who doesn't jump about punching the air all the time. You had very few subscribers then, I said they will come and I was right. Then hitting the 75k subscribers mark. But most of all I remember seeing lucy lemon in full production, it was so loaded with fruit. That might be 3 years ago or more…. Still going strong Scott ๐Ÿ˜‰

  16. Stop, don't compost those leeks, pull 'em chop 'em and freeze them, they'll be great in soup. Have you thought about growing blueberries, the bushes are enormously productive. The 1870 Homestead harvests gallons if them. I hated when I had to stop feeding the birds because the discarded sunflower hearts were atracting rats. The goldfinches and bluetits visiting were wonderful to watch. I have a good one for you… how about a picture of a hand and finger pointing down… it's called a home grown dibber ๐Ÿ˜‰

  17. Congratulations on the 200,000 subscribers and โค๏ธโค๏ธ to you and sweet Phoebe. I enjoy watching your videos because you are knowledgeable. I know that if there is something I need to know I can usually go back through your archive and find the answer in video format. Thanks for sharing and spending the time with us.
Sorry I missed the live stream. As to the merchandise I would surely buy a shirt with your employee of the month proudly displayed on it!! You take care and happy gardening. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  18. Phoebe inspired me to give my puppy carrots for treats and her teeth and breath are fabulous. ๐Ÿ˜…
