Multiplying dahlia plants with cuttings… Sometimes you gotta get messy!

Hi Gardeners! How is your garden doing now? Is everything waking up to the beauty to Spring, I am not sure if you got the memo, but Spring is only a few days away, so my expectations are high and the weather better be turning to the better (As I write this with snow on the outside).

  1. I am in love with dahlias. I will be starting mine and looking at how you started given me a start as I just received my two types of bootstrap trays. Thanks for the idea.

  2. Just separated my liatris corms. OMG…the roots! Roxana, have you ever started liatris corms? So easy!

  3. You live and you learn. It's the first time I've seen tuber sprouts being separated rather than the tuber being divided before presprouting

  4. I did this last year after I watched your video. I had four pretty good sized pots going. I hardened them off then put them in the garden to plant the next day. SOMEONE dropped and dragged the hose across them and broke all the dahlias! I wanted to cry! I was so upset that I couldn’t even address it with this someone. What was he even doing in the garden anyway? He is never in there! I like the clear plastic pot idea! Trying again this year and warning someone ahead of time…😆

  5. So how do you know they’ll send up more sprouts after you take some? Does it have more than one growth point on the neck?

  6. You got quite a lot of cuttings from the tubers, that’s exciting!! You can pot up that tuber that didn’t produce roots, it might just be a little slow 😕 😊

  7. I love this tutorial Roxana, thank you! And I have just received a couple of orders from Bootstrap Farmer after watching your videos and I love, love, love them too! All of the colors are fantastic! Thank you!

  8. Thank you for such helpful info! It looks like the growth part the eye of the tuber – do I need to make sure it has several growth points in order to keep taking cutting or will it keep regrowing? Thank you in advance

  9. That Arabian Nights Dahlia is beautiful. I love Thomas Edison, it is such a deep dark purple. I'm going to be putting my dahlia tubers in trays tomorrow to pre-sprout them. I saved my tubers from last year in my not-cool basement (it stays about 65 to 70 degrees) I figured I might as well give it a try. Well, when I opened the container there were some sprouts that were almost a foot long! I broke them off and hopefully they will grow more after them being in soil under lights.

  10. What a fabulous idea! Who knew you could get dahlias so many different ways. 🌸💚

  11. Very informative. Once the sprouts are cut, should the cut areas on the tubers be dried or is it ok to plant right away in their own pots? Is it ok to plant the tuber clusters all together or should they be divided?

  12. Great video! I love that you show how to detach the sprouts based on a few different variations of how they may be growing. I've gotta put this on my 'to try' list 🙂 P.S. Also picked up that t-shirt recently…can't resist plant shirts 🙃

  13. I have never overwintered dahlias. This makes me want to try it. Maybe I will try this year if I get any. For the first time, I overwintered some gladiolus bulbs and geraniums tubers, which should be easy to wake up hopefully! I have been multiplying some coleus and licorice with cuttings this winter, which has been successful so far. We just got a foot of snow, so I am just checking on my seedlings every couple of hours to get my fix LOL

  14. I gambled and left my dahlias in the ground. Six plants sprouted already. What!?!, so early. We’re in faux Spring in Atlanta. I’m putting protection over them on nights at or below freezing to save them.

  15. Oh my gosh, Great video! I have my dahlia tubers just sitting in a create when I can be multiplying them! I am definitely going to give this a try. First, I’ll have to pre sprout. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Also, I really love the reusable pots. I had a look and I can get them here in the UK.💃🏿💃🏿 😁

  16. YAY!!! I'm so excited for you Roxana! It is about time that Bootstrap sponsored you. You know you brought them to my attention and I just absolutely love my stuff. The cost is shocking up front, but so worth it!!! The best seed starting supplies. If someone is not in love with seed starting, and does not know if they will continue each year…then maybe don't spend so much. But, for those of us that LOVE seed starting, there is no better place to buy supplies! I submitted another order to Bootstrap this morning for 10×20 trays. I've got to have some soon!

  17. Free plants!!! yay. I love trying to propagate my seedlings when I prune or pinch back. I just did some petunia's this week.

  18. I have made several bootstrap purchases and I ❤ everything I've gotten. How does bootstrap know you are sending them so much business? Do they give u a discount code for your viewers to track it?
