Meet the Backyard Chickens | Garden Planning 2023 | Seed Starting Mistakes | 8b Organic Gardening

Come meet the backyard chickens and hear about our garden plans for the year! In between chicken cuddles, we’ve been planning out our largest garden yet. We’ve already started our first round of seeds, and it may have been a mistake…

Our chicks hatched in November, and we’ve been nurturing them over the winter, patiently waiting for our first egg. Aside from providing fresh eggs, they are going to help with managing food scraps and supporting our compost system, as well as working on pest control and bringing so much life and joy to the garden. They are truly adorable and ridiculous creatures!

It’s going to be an epic year – we’re going on a grand adventure with our six Barred Rock hens, growing so much food in our garden that I’m not even sure how I’m going to handle it. The goal is to grow enough produce to eat fresh, but also to preserve for the darker months, and give us enough protected space that we can overwinter a wider variety of produce than we have in the past. To help in that effort, we’re looking forward to incorporating low tunnels, no till / no dig and permaculture methods, plus grow bags into our already organic garden.

We jumped the gun a little bit for our area in the Pacific Northwest (zone 8b) and started quite a few plants already. Right after we started seeds we had a cold snap and they are the most leggy frostbitten seedlings I’ve ever seen. Hopefully most of them will survive!

All of this will tie in with our kitchen projects – featuring an amazing abundance of produce right from our yard. We’re truly going all in on this experiment and I invite you to join us as we move through the seasons and share triumphs, failures and amazing recipes.
