Creating a Garden Space That Will Last – Before building your raised garden beds

I’ll show you the most important first steps in creating a garden that will last a lifetime. Do this before building your raised garden beds, plant your in ground flower garden, or and other type of backyard garden or front yard garden.

The process of properly preparing the foundation and underground utilities for a garden space is the key to creating a highly functional garden with minimal long term maintenance and maximum yield. After over 15 years of creating home gardens I’m finally creating my dream garden in my backyard by drawing on everything I’ve learned from previous gardens to create a space that it beautifully, functional, and long lasting. This is a lot of work up front, but it will pay off ten fold in the amount of time, effort, and headaches that often arise when the foundation of a garden space is not properly designed and built from the beginning. So do yourself a favor and do it right the first time!

  1. I use a lot of cardboard in my gardening and I'm happy to learn about Ram board. I had never heard of that before, so thank you!

  2. Why did you choose pea gravel instead of DG as the top layer this time?
I feel like I would want to walk around barefoot and it would be easier in DG 😆

  3. Ummm, since there are so many of you now. I think you should let me take, at least, one of you to my home! 😂🤩👍🏼
I can’t wait to see what is in store for the rest of this masterpiece. Amazing job gardening AND editing!

  4. The way you put this video together was really cool! It took me a while to figure out all the extra people were you! Very interesting.

  5. Wow! You are an amazingly detailed gardener. I don't think I have the energy or OCD to pull this off. All I gotta say is you better not change your mind 2 years down the road!

  6. Kyle. Dude, you did a really awesome job. Man I made a mistake by not putting cardboard down on the ground before I put in the mulch. Now all the weeds and grass are coming through. But still nice to have 4 garden beds all seeded up for spring. Keep up the good works. Super impressive.

  7. I love your orchard videos (I added 5 fruit trees to my suburban yard thanks to you!), but this has to be my new favourite video. Your patience and attention to detail is amazing and I can only imagine how long this took. Can't wait to see the next videos in this process!!

  8. I’m so excited to finally see this series! I can’t even fathom how much planning and work went into this.

  9. what the heck that was so complicated and over the top. But I admire your energy and work ethic and thoroughness

  10. Phenomenal! But why raised garden beds instead of keeping what you had before? What are you getting from the raised beds that you were not getting from what you had before?

  11. Great video! I need to create multiples of myself for my garden work too! 😂 Your garden beds are beautiful, well done.

  12. With all this up front material cost and effort, by the time this starts to pay off (avoiding grocery store produce prices)… It'll be time to start paying money and doing work to repair and replace parts of the infrastructure.
