I’m in nj renting a 110 year old house. Our clean out vent is a grated piece of metal that floats off when the nasty stuff overflows (during heavy rain or snow melt). Much better to have it outside than inside.
or install a 4" swing check ,it's code for new construction in N.Y. sewer waste goes out swing check closes,sewer waste cannot flow back.
cause it's not code does not mean you can not put it in .
it pays for it self the first time it's used.

Can confirm. Live in los angeles. When my sewer backs up raw sewage comes pour out my toliet…. nice to know how to prevent this!!! I rather have raw sewage in my yard then all over my house floor. my home was built in 1914….
As long as it is sewer gas tight, you are fine. They should be in a valve box anyway
