How to Plant A Rose in a Container – More David Austins! | Gardening with Creekside

I am so excited to be adding two new David Austin roses to the garden this year, and I am going to show you exactly how easy it is to plant a rose in a container. ‘Elizabeth’ and ‘Nye Bevan’ are new introductions to the market this year from our friends at @david_austin_roses, and I have been eager to plant them in two Unique Stone containers in the backyard ever since I ordered them last winter.

  1. Perfect timing for me, just got two barefoot roses and trying to decide on ground or potted. I'm going potted after watching this and I'll follow your guidance. Hope Mine do as well as yours!🥀🌷🥀

  2. Thanks for supporting the appropriate idea of using good potting soil and adding compost. I find it difficult when I watch other well known youtube gardeners telling novice people to add new potting soil to old to "refresh" it. How could they ever be successful in container gardening.

  3. Annuals can suffocate your beautiful rose, if you plant them in the same pot. I personally grow roses in containers for many years, and the rule is one container one rose. As far as I know, root system of roses cannot compete with other plants, that is why traditionally they were grown separately from other plants. But I wish you good luck and hope for the best for your gorgeous roses.

  4. My perennial hibiscus isn't doing anything yet. I'm in zone 8. Do you think it's a goner? My peony has one bud.

  5. Jenny, could you please tell me the approximate width/depth of those 2 containers? I have 1 Rose in a container about 18" diameter and 22" deep. Wondering if I need to up the depth.
I planted it Bare root in fall 2020. 2021 it flowered abundantly, 2022 only got about 5 flowers, and now it broke dormancy about 3 weeks ago and I moved it to get more sun so hoping it flowers better this year.
Zone 6 Paris suburbs. I covered it against our coldest nights and days in the dead of winter. The Y1 and this year it got/will get at least 9 hours of Summer Sun. Y2 it got about 6 full hours of sun. I did prune lightly each year in March. Thanks❤.

  6. Thanks Jenny…my David Austins haven't been doing too well in the ground or containers…

  7. Not related to this video, but keep wondering what you have done about getting rid of the raised bed with the dodder infestation.

  8. I love your videos! I learn something new every time I watch. Love the urns. Keep up the great work! Love watching Brenna. Thanks for "letting" her participate!!

  9. I would just like to say if you live in a colder zone the rose you are growing in a container should be at least two zones lower than the zone what you are growing in otherwise the containers should receive winter protection. Bonny zone 5b

  10. Awesome info! I have never planted roses. I’ve been meaning to. But haven’t had the cash. But I will.

  11. You have made your property so lush and beautiful. I was wondering what type of grass you planted. It looks as if it doesn't have those annoying runners that make it so hard to maintain.

  12. Thank you so much for this! I will plant a David Austin rose in a container as soon as it warms up in Toronto. We had a Belgian Shepard who was a complete ringer for Brenna! I so enjoy watching her in your videos!!! Thanks for sharing her with us! Cheers from Canada.

  13. Where did you get your fertilome fertilizer that you put on your roses One cap full once a month it is a dry fertilizer like osmacote sorry about spelling. Thanks Jennie

  14. 23:44 I love how you keep it real, Jenny. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve tried to plant some thing with one hand and transfer heavy soil with the other.

  15. Please tell me what you sell for Japanese beetles as prevention. I put down some organic milk spores but there was something else you recommended.Thank you!!

  16. Thanks for the information and demonstration can't wait to get mine going. Can you please give information on the birdhouse again? Thanks

  17. Can't wait to see the blooms on your new potted roses.
Can you please do a video when you stake your rose standard. I have a D.A. Rose standard that I have to re-stake and I'm nervous about disturbing the roots. 🙂
