Looking for a fun and easy DIY project to do with your kids? This design will allow for the production of strawberry runners which can be propagated to produce even more strawberries! Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting out, this project is a great way to spend time with your family while creating something amazing!

Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits to grow at home. They’re easy to care for and can be grown in containers or in the ground. Follow these simple steps to maintain healthy strawberry plants:

Step 1: Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Strawberries need at least 6 hours of sunlight daily to produce fruit.

Step 2: Plant the strawberries in the spring or fall. Make sure to space them 12-18 inches apart and plant them at the same depth as they were in their original containers.

Step 3: Water the strawberries regularly, especially during dry spells, and avoid overwatering. Too much water can lead to root rot and fungal diseases.

Step 4: Weed the area around the strawberries regularly to prevent competition for nutrients and water.

Step 5: Mulch the area around the strawberries with straw or other organic material to retain moisture and prevent weed growth. This will also help regulate the temperature of the soil.

Step 6: Pinch off runners (long stems with small plants on the ends) to encourage the plant to focus its energy on producing fruit. This will also help control the spread of the plant.

(Or you can take those runners and propagate then into new plants)

Soil Blend:
The soil I used for this project is a mixture of the following:
45% Organic Compost
45% Fruit & Vegetable Organic Soil
5% Sandy Loam
5% Citric Compost (I.e Lemons, oranges)

*Note: I did amend the soil when transplanting the strawberries by adding a very minuscule sprinkle of root hormone to reduce the transfer shock to the roots.

Strawberry Growing Tips:
Choose the right variety: Make sure to choose a strawberry variety that is well-suited for your climate and soil conditions. Some good choices for Zone 8b include Camarosa, Chandler, and Seascape.

Plant in the right location: Strawberries need full sun to thrive, so choose a location that gets at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Also, make sure the soil is well-draining and has a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.

Provide adequate water: Strawberries need consistent moisture to produce healthy fruit. Water deeply once a week, and more often during hot, dry weather.

Mulch to conserve moisture: Mulching around your strawberry plants will help conserve moisture and keep the soil cool. Use straw, pine needles, or shredded leaves for best results.

Fertilize appropriately: Too much fertilizer can lead to weak growth and fewer berries, so be sure to follow the recommended application rates. Use a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10, in early spring and again after fruiting.

Control pests and diseases: Keep an eye out for pests like slugs, snails, and aphids, and treat as needed with organic pest control methods. Also, be sure to remove any diseased leaves or fruit to prevent the spread of disease.
