In this grow guide, we’ll cover questions like how to grow watermelons from seed, how to plant watermelons, as well as things like pollination, fertilizing, watering, how to tell when watermelons are ripe, plus a taste test of course!

I’m excited to be sharing this Summer growing journey with you, and I hope it helps to give you some insight and inspiration to grow your own delicious watermelons in your garden.

Extra Watermelon Growing Tips:
– Watermelon seeds need warm temperatures to germinate, at least 18c (65f).

– If you have a short Summer growing season, you can get the seedlings going somewhere warm indoors so they’re ready to be transplanted once it’s warm enough.

– I try to avoid starting them too early in Spring as you want them to continue with their seedling vigor into rapid growth through nice warm Summer weather. They grow especially fast when temperatures are 25c (77f) and above.

– You can get varieties that grow and mature faster than others, so have a quick google of your chosen variety to see if you have a growing season long enough to suit the amount of days that variety needs to mature. For example: Gold in Gold variety matures around 70 days from transplant & Moon & Stars needs a longer season at 85 days from transplant.

– Watermelon seeds can also be sown directly once the temperature is warm enough outside, and works best if you live somewhere with a season that caters for the full length of time that these take to grow.

-Above all else, if it doesn’t work out well the first time you grow them, have another go next year! I’ve failed multiple times growing them in the past, but this is the best way to learn, grow and become a better gardener!

Wishing you all the best with the growing, and let me know how it goes! 🙂

  2. Hello mate, are you open to sharing some seeds of these watermelons and other goodies that you grow in NewZ?
I'm from Moldova, would love to try those out here.

  3. Thanks alot for the video! I have one comment on the way you cut the watermelon – first cut was in the wright way, but second cut, after spiltting two half's, should be in the same direction as the first, not vertically. The way you cut watermelon affects the bite texture in the mouth, it is much better when cutting only from the long direction of the watermelon.
    Thanks!

  4. Your program is great, but I have a suggestion, if it is possible to mention every material you use in growing plants on the screen of your program, thank you.

  5. Thank you for the primer. I learned a lot, PLUS, I love watermelon. I learned of a new variety through your video. You do a great job of teaching.

  6. I absolutely adore your landscape. I would live at that location today! The view is awesome. I love farming and chickens around the yard. Oh!

  7. Hi
    I love these melons
I will try to grow them as well
This will be my first try
I actually have got few questions. Could you please clarify
    1. Do you water your melons with cold water or warm. Does it matter ?
    2. I’ve read that once the fruits appear you should water them few times a month but you do that quite often and your fruits are just amazing. If you could tell the frequency of watering on different periods of growing that would be great
    Thanks !
