We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest – Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible and we are completely off grid.
Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No dig lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 60-70% self sufficient in our food needs.
Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.

In our videos you can follow our journey as we share our experiences and what we get up to at Freedom Forest. This week it was time to slow down, just a little, after a previous BIG week of planting out. In this video, I’m relaxing with a coffee in the Food Forest and answering a couple of questions we often get asked, then for a look at the lovely Summer crops we’ve been planting out.

We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below).
It takes us about a day to film each video and another few evenings to edit it, Patreon provides a way you can support what we do with any size donation you wish, it could simply be the value of a packet of seeds! We have many projects coming up, as well as wanting to improve our videos with better camera equipment… maybe even a drone one day to make our videos even more detailed and better quality for you to enjoy! You can help make it viable for us to keep putting the time into making these videos by becoming a Patreon. In return your name will appear in the end credits of our videos and we’ll message you a password for the ‘members area’ of our website where we share more of our favourite recipes exclusively for our Patreon’s 💚

  1. Thanks for the update, the new beds look stunningly crisp. I especially like the bed with the rock sided pathway in the middle. We are now also working on an extension on the garden which we will solely use for multi-year perennials.

  2. It’s still cheaper for me to buy many of what I grow, so I’m looking forward to the financial benefits as I scale every year but this isn’t the main reason I grow as much food as I can. Like you, I can’t see myself going back to not growing something every year. In addition to the superb taste and nutritional benefits of home-grown, compared to store-bought, I derive so much joy and happiness from the process. I feel so much more alive and connected to nature. And let’s not forget the overall mental health benefits which is sometimes underestimated . Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Very much appreciated.

  3. I am growing my own food and the percent of food that you provide for yourself is definitely determined by what you are prepared to eat. I have reduced processed grain products, sugar and bought in oils and use homegrown products myself. I make my own cooking oil- tallow, raise my own meat, and grow a heap of veg. These days my breakfast is meat and veg and a cup of bone broth. It is a choice to use your own food and it is a much healthier choice to make

  4. Brilliant video! I totally agree that home-grown veg and fruit is more nutritious than shop-bought. Here I grow as much of our food as I possibly can, using no chemicals, just no-dig permaculture methods. Keep up the good work…and happy gardening.

  5. Another wonderful video, I agree 💯 % with you for the reasons to grow your own food. Being vegan permaculture focused guy I dream of having several acres of my own to grow even more. Maybe once I win the lottery 😊 until then my allotment plots will have to do lol
It's great to see how much you have managed to get done. Keep up the great work both of you. 🌍💚🌱🌳🌿

  6. 🌎 we humans used to live off the land, reared farm animals, but we lost it once the ease and simplicity of mass food production became the norm, & understandably so.

  7. Love your ethos and philosophy. As climate change rapidly unfolds our food security is going to become increasingly at risk. We won't all be able to grow all our food, but we need to do what we can to take some control of our food systems. For me, this is both within my own garden, but also developing community growing space. Alongside that, caring for the soil, which has been hugely degraded by industrial agriculture, will be key to carbon sequestration and important in mitigating extreme weather events.
What you are doing is all good!
I am so interested to see how your taro experiment goes. We all need to diversify to be more resilient and you are helping us see what is possible.

  8. Fantastic video Laurie, I totally agree with you. You and Dan have worked so hard and created an amazing, beautiful and productive space, it really inspires me to get on with sorting out my own garden. I love to experiment with new and/or unusual crops too so I'm very much looking forward to seeing how you get on with the taro! One potential source of future income and dealing with surplus could be to sell the plants themselves (eg sweet potato starts, yacon, taro 😃), no doubt a bit of red tape involved but maybe worth a look?
