Traditional Japanese Style Rice Fish Patio Pond in Zen Garden: Easy Maintenance/ Feed & Breed

Finally, I set up a new bigger Japanese rice fish patio pond (Melaka Biotope) in my Zen Garden. It is the upgraded version of my last mini pond. This time, I got lots of new fish with just easy maintenance and bit more love and care. I made this patio pond with very old Japanese traditional method appeared in 1700s. So, it has no filter, just relies on the natural ecosystem. I am very happy with the result, and very excited to share with you my new pond! Hope you enjoy watching my new baby fish 🐟

  1. Subscribed! Thanks for the inspiration. I've just set up my rice fish pond. I'm also in Australia so I found the same pot as yours at the local Bunnings (but I went with the larger 75cm size). I plugged up the hole with 2 part epoxy as your video suggested and it worked perfectly. No leaks! Thanks again for sharing, all the best with your Zen Garden!

  2. I wonder if you need heater for your pond in winter? I’m new to brisbane as I am not sure about water temp in winter.

  3. Im assuming you're in Australia because of your plant choice. I have no trouble getting akadama here in Adelaide. If I can get it in Adelaide at the bonsai nursery, I would have thought you could get in in any major city.😊😊

  4. Amazing pond, thank you for sharing! Do you happen to know if the pot you used is sold online? I am having a hard time finding something similar in my area.

  5. It seems to me that outdoor ponds cycle faster.

I suggest adding a pot with plants from another pond into new pond to jump start the cycle, since a lot of the good microbes live in the pot that was sitting in an older pond.

I also suggest giving away some of your medaka and adding some unrelated fish into your pond. It will help you produce more healthy fish in the future, since it will help increase the gene pool.

  6. Hi. I live in Australia but I’m finding it very difficult to get any water hyacinth for my patio pond. May I ask where you got yours. Thank you.

  7. Thank you so much, for sharing your pond with us, and how you put it together. It's so beautiful. I imagine it gives you such pleasure to look at, and take care of. I also love the spot it is in, with that lovely bushy plant that surrounds it, like a warm hug. Everything including the pond looks so neat and tidy. Very peaceful. I love all of it. Thanks again.

  8. Very nice, might be too many fish. The environment can only support a certain amount of fish per gallon. There is a calculator if you Google it you will see how many inches of fish per gallon of water that will live without building up too much ammonia which is toxic.

  9. Hi what is the new pot made of? Is it some sort of fibreglass?
    Thanks

  10. Thanks for sharing your story of your pond. I’m thinking of making a pond too, so this gave me some inspiration. I don’t know if I’d keep fish though; it looks like a lot of work!

  11. You can use laterite, bentonite or lava rocks instead of akadama. That's what people in U.S. uses for patio ponds.

If you're diligent, cat litter made from laterite or bentonite without clumping or scented properties can be found everywhere. Otherwise both van be found at your local hardware stores in the gardening section.

  12. If you need to prevent soil from getting into the water column, a lot of folks in the aquascaping communities use mesh bags to contain the dirt then cap with sand. The sand will help prevent the dirt from leeching nutrients and keep the water clear.

  13. I love this information…fabulous😊i am seriously gobsmacked, knowledge is amazing…you are brilliant

  14. Growing that micro organisms for your fish surprised me. 👍🏼👍🏼 over here people buy from aquarium shops and it can be quite expensive

  15. I really have enjoyed your video and your beautiful pond. It turned out just gorgeous! 💜

  16. Magical! Without any techie bits of equipment you produce an aquatic oasis. There is something delightfully childlike in the way you combine all the techniques into something that is truly awe inspiring. The management of the water for the daphna is so well explained I live in the UK so I doubt if my ponds would overwinter, but I'm inspired to give it a try in an adapted format. Thank you 🙂
