Removing My Sweet Peas and Sowing Sunflowers! 🌻 :: Early Morning in the Garden

Welcome Gardeners! I’m out in the garden early today, enjoying the crisp cool morning and removing my allll my sweet peas! One of my viewers, Colan, pointed out to me that sweet peas are a legume and they fix nitrogen! Genius! So now instead of pulling the entire sweet pea plant, I will be leaving the roots in the ground for hopefully a nitrogen boost for my future sunflowers! 🌻 Enjoy!

  1. I was surprised to see my Sweet Pea come back this year! I'm in Zone 6 and planted a 4" pot late last Spring. It didn't bloom lady Summer so hope it does this year.

  2. Chem Camp sounds great for that age! I hope they have a good teacher that makes it FUN😊! I loved Summer School at my elementary school & Junior High when I was young. We're talking 1961-68 😮😂😅 …

  3. Sunflowers form a taproot, that's why they're best to be direct down and left alone. Thinning by cutting one of the sunflowers is best because it doesn't disturb the root of the one you want to keep.

  4. Definitely harvest the seeds on the sweet peas. Your dahlias should be beautiful. 💙

  5. It’s very hard to grow sweet peas in Florida as well. I’m going to sow seeds Sept 1 and see how they’ll do over the winter.

  6. Awe…your kitten is so cute❤. Thanks for sharing your new bee house. It was so informative on the kindest, best pollinating bees 🐝

  7. I read another great nitrogen producer is comfrey aka borage too. The have pretty blue flowers and typically are perennial! We should plant both for fun.❤

  8. Good morning, Janey. Soraya is pronounced "So-Rye-A"…(it's my sister-in-law's name), meaning star cluster in Arabic. Thanks for wanting to know. Happy gardening

  9. Thank you so much for sharing this. I initially wondered why I followed you since I’m a senior lady in South Carolina. So glad I hit that button! You are a breath of fresh air! Just ordered some sunflower seeds from Johnnys to sow with my granddaughter. It will be a first for me trying sunflowers.
With love, admiration and respect from a former Kentucky master gardener.

  10. With your love of sweet peas, have you ever considered a sweet pea shrub? I have the 'petite butterfly' variety and I love it! It's drought tolerant, evergreen once established, and blooms forever! In fact, I just picked up another one at Lowe's this year.

  11. I will cut off the tops of my green beans, then, before I plant my sunflowers along my fence. I believe the 3 sisters were corn, squash, and BEANS. I live in the southwest. The beans grew up the corn and the corn shaded the squash.

  12. FYI – sunflowers Much prefer to be direct sown. They really hate the root disruption of being transplanted.
Curious why you didnt save seeds from the sweet peas? You could sow again next year without having to buy seed.

  13. Your presence on video is amazing! Wishing we were neighbors as you are super friendly! Beautiful gardens!

  14. The sweet peas did beautifully for you,it’s sad to let them go bug I’m sure the sunflowers will be just as beautiful ❤

  15. Thank you for all the great information. I also live in 9B and started watching your channel to get a better idea of what I could grow successfully. I noticed when you harvested your sweet peas that you did not harvest any of the seed pods. I grew sweet peas for the first time this year and was planning on harvesting the seed pods for a crop next year. Will the seeds I harvest grow next year?

  16. Hi Janey! Kathleen in St. Helena here. Thee pronunciation of your new branching Soraya sunflowers is sore-eye-yah, accent on the “eye”. That is my granddaughter’s name – we both planted Soraya sunflowers from Johnny’s last year (me in St. Helena, Soraya in Cabin John, Maryland). They are beautiful and productive.

  17. I got up and out into my garden early today as well! The weather was perfect. Great informative video. What a wonderful "cover crop!" I still don't have much success with growing from seed, but I keep trying. Looking forward to more info on your adopted park! You never fail to amaze me with how many things you can juggle. Happy summer!

  18. Your sunflowers will be great! I was surprised you planted at 12 inches apart, typically the stalks get super large when there is a larger gap between them.
