Claus Dalby on how to grow dahlias in pots and what to grow with them

Claus Dalby’s pots of dahlias and other plants look like a herbaceous border. But it is much easier to switch plants round when they’re over. Claus shows you his garden and explains how he chooses plants to create a colourful grouping in pots and how he grows dahlias in pots.

  1. Oh my gosh! I can't get over how beautiful his garden is! I can't get over the colors and shapes of the different dahlias, the foliage plants, and everything else. Typically, I don't like cool tone flowers and dark foliage but he completely changed my mind. This video was very inspirational! I can't wait to grow dahlias next year! Sorry for all the exclamation marks…I'm American.

  2. I love seeing this. My mother played the piano and many of the songs played on his videos. We always had tea every afternoon.

  3. You changed my life…..I am not an experienced gardener but am soaking up every bit of knowledge I can get. I'm happiest when I'm kneeling in the dirt planting flowers. I have been disappointed the last few years that none of my Dahlias have come up after planting them in the front flower garden the past few years. This year I found out what has been happening with them. The bulbs were all squishy and rotted out. I live in the Seattle/Tacoma area and after watching this video I had an "Ah-ha" moment and now am going to plant them in containers! My soil is too wet and they drowned after certain times of the year when we get a lot of rain. Now I just need to learn how to transport them into bigger pots until they can be put outside in their final pot for blooming.

  4. Fabulous tips! I have 45 dahlias I plant out on 3 terraces every May. (Slugs eat the lot if I leave them in) – I learnt a lot in this video about the importance of combining foliage colour. I fill gaps with cosmos but I love the use of cleomes in Klaus’ display . I’ve grown them before and they last all summer, well into the autumn.

  5. Thank you for sharing your garden and knowledge with us. I’m a YouTube gardener too. It’s my 3rd year as a gardener and I’m still learning as I grow. This year I’m trying to add companion plants to my garden. This is very helpful and I am so happy I found your channel because it has so much to offer. I hope we can learn more from each other as we grow our gardens and our channels!

  6. Beautiful, quintessentially Northern European garden, feasting on the richness of colour. Excellent tour. Thank you!

  7. What is the music playing during the 'dahlia show'. Is it a Chopin piece? Wonderful, inspiring video. Thank you.

  8. Minutes 2:42, building structure in the back, directly between the 2 pillars, "inverted pentagram"! Hidden in plain sight! Thinking Dahlias, instead found an inverted pentagram, God talking silently to His own❤! Thank God for Jesus Christ!

  9. I grew dahlias in pots last year – most were plastic pits. I wasn't that happy with the result, but Claus uses terracotta pots, which can breathe. it was my first year doing it. This year I will try again,( am Down Under) , but will do a couple of things differently. I like to plant my spring bulbs in pots so when they go over I move them our the back and don't have to look at the dying foliage 🙂

  10. I get a problem with powdery mildew on some plants and dahlias is one of them 🙁 My garden is very small and enclosed – I think it may be lack of air flow as well as humidity we get where I live. I really want to grow Cleome 🙂

  11. Thank you for a very detailed & inspiring video. I live in the UK (plant hardiness zone 9a). In 2022 growing season, I planted two varieties of dahlias (Kilburn Fiesta & Brecon Ballerina) in containers. In October, I decided not to dig these up. I cut the main stem to about a height of 2 inches and covered up the top of the containers in about 2 inches of (dry) pine needles and brought the two containers into my (unheated) conservatory. On sunny days, I place the containers outside to ensure they remain below 10C. I sense that I should not water these at all. Next autumn (2023), I plan to re-pot them into an even larger container. Can you add anything further that I should do to ensure their survival?

  12. It's me again, almost a year later – I grew some dahlias from seed and now I'm winterizing some handsome tubers.
This year I am ready to prepare my pots to plant dahlias. Wish me luck. Again, thank you for instructions.

  13. First time growing dahlias i did so in pots with complete success. Then i get the great idea of trying in the ground and it was a complete mess with other flowers, weeds and staking and some did not even come up. Never again lol. For the season they last, might as well pot them.

  14. How do you protect it from winter?also if I cover it with plastic do you think it will grow back?

  15. Thank you! I love Claus. I wish I could live at his home. I'd happily be his errand-person.

  16. Claus made me smile – what a lovely friendly and knowledgeable guy, I love how he introduced his dog 🐕 too 😊. Oh and what a stunning garden 🏡

  17. Lovely! I will try some dahlias in pots this year. I get full sun on my porch, so it should be perfect.

  18. One of the most interesting and useful videos from your channel Alexandra. Thank you to you and Claus for putting this together.

  19. I enjoyed this video very much, although I would have liked to hear what he has to say about dividing Dahlias.

  20. not got to the end yet, hope you tell us how to get rid of blackfly without using chemicals.
