What to do when ONIONS BOLT: Growing in the Garden



Growing onions is so satisfying. However, you may not know what to do when onions bolt. Seeing flower stalks forming on your growing onions can be disheartening.
A bulb on a top center stalk of your onion means it has begun the process of flowering and making seeds. This is called “bolting” and it is bad news for onion growers.

    Its important to remember where you put those pesky little seeds. I missed planting this spring cuz i couldnt figure out where the bucket of seed heads ended up, well they were in a little jar all separated out. Ha so now i'll plantem late n who knows

    Cut them off when still bud. 😂

    no, it's a natural process.

    we choose to stress plants and animals for our gourmand pleasures.
    there is a big and important difference in saying: look how to stop the flowering process to get big bulbs, and another to claim that the plant that flowers or produces seeds is…stressed.

    I was wondering what those flowers in the corner of the garden were. Last year I had a couple, this year nearly a dozen stalks as tall as I am. I know my neighbor isn't a fan of it being so close to the property line, so I guess it's harvest time in the middle of June. Better late to the party than never, I suppose.

    Very informative. It is very disappointing when we get a high rate of bolting. Don’t count your onions until they’re in the bag.

    Onions typicaly bolt in their second year. Don't plant sets . Plant slips or start your own and you probably won't have a bolting issue.

    I disagree. I removed the flowers and the bulb continued to grow and stored perfectly.

    In indonesia, the bolted onion which not bloomed yet called bunga bawang. It taste best to stir-fry them with garlic and some Chili's. Bunga bawang tastes little spicy similar like pepper but have a nice aroma when it stir-fry. I really recommend this!

    After the flower is cut of the bulb is continuing to grow,in the same manner as garlic when the skapes are cut off.

    Thank you so much for your informative video. I have these wildly growing all over my yard . I use the stalks but never knew what the bolts were. I just let them blew with the wind or admire the lovely flower. Now I know. They smell like onion/ garlic. Thanks.
